The Steam Deck isn’t the only gaming laptop on the market, but the Asus ROG Ally has a big brand and big ambitions. On the outside, it’s a dynamic laptop with RGB lighting and a sleek chassis. However, the Windows 11 device seems to be backing up its sense of style with higher-end specs, and first impressions indicate it’s a high-end powerhouse.
In a new preview video, Asus ROG Ally Linus Tech Tips talks about the upcoming laptop. While the YouTube channel’s top star says he can’t share any information about the game’s framerate, he does relay Asus’ claims. As mentioned above, the laptop can apparently double the performance of a Steam Deck at 35W while delivering 50% faster speeds at 15W.
Again, we don’t have any solid performance numbers to work with at the moment, but based on experience, Linus exclaims that Horizon Zero Dawn’s gameplay looks “incredible.” He also notes that “at seven inches, 1080p looks amazingly sharp” and it doesn’t seem like the images come with any noticeable frame rate caveats.
Linus screams a lot about fluidity throughout the video, but also tries to replicate it on the big screen using an Nvidia RTX 4090 case and ROG XG Mobile eGPU. The setup will probably set you back around $2,500, so renting it to handle 4K gaming might be a bit of a stretch. However, the fact that you can apparently squeeze out what appears to be “significantly better than 60fps” using a docked setup from Asus is an idea worth exploring, especially if you’re considering buying the best gaming laptop for your PC. , office and on the way.
The first looks at the Asus ROG Ally demonstrate the fact that this laptop is not a competitor to the Steam Deck in terms of value. Of course, we’ll have to wait for pricing information, but it looks like it’ll serve as an all-in-one desktop, laptop, and handheld console replacement. In other words, you could be a winner if you have a switch and no existing hardware.
It may be a while before Steam Deck 2 arrives, and Valve’s original handheld still has a bright future ahead of it.
