In terms of popularity and revenue, video games have come a long way in the last thirty years: Call of Duty, World of Warcraft, and Grand Theft Auto, to name just a few, have now become legitimate cultural phenomena with any movie. or TV show. You could mention. But just as the top-tier, mega-hit live service game took our industry to the next level, it may have overshadowed some gaming experiences. It seems like everything should be massively multiplayer these days, with an open world and backed by a Two-year DLC roadmap. Space game Fort Solis, starring Roger Clark (better known as Arthur Morgan from Red Dead Redemption 2) and Troy Baker, aka Joel from The Last of Us, offers an alternative.
Story driven, with a strong writing voice, niche appeal, and relatively short runtime, it’s the definition of a game of two kinds. Playing as Fort Solis engineer Jack Leary (voiced by Clark), the action takes place over the course of one night as you try to uncover the mysterious tragedy that has occurred at the space base of the same name.
James Tinsdale, Fort Solis Game Director and founder of developer Fallen Leaf, spoke to our sister site The Loadout at this year’s Game Developers Conference. The goal of the studio, like the one at Fort Solis, is to keep the double-A game afloat.
“We’re not going to do The Witcher or go to CD Projekt RED or anything like that,” says Tinsdale. “If you see the Fallen Leaf logo on the trailer, you know it’s going to be high-end cinematic storytelling and a well-presented experience. We try to get into this little corner and say, “This is who we are. We will sit here and make top-class, high-quality games for as long as we can and for as long as people want.”
Scheduled for a Q3 2023 release, Fort Solis follows in the footsteps of hits like The Callisto Protocol and Dead Space Remake, but aims to tell a richer, more focused story in reduced playtime. If you’re short on time and missing out on something a bit more romantic, or perhaps the equivalent of a good TV miniseries, this might be for you.
“Actually, we wait four to six hours,” says Tinsdale. “But our price will reflect that, we won’t sell at $70. In the end, we will set a fair price to meet expectations. You can add Fort Solis to your Steam wishlist right now.
If not, take a look at some of the other top games scheduled for release in 2023. You might also want to check out some great indie games, or maybe the best horror games on PC.
