“Killing Sonic the Hedgehog” is just amazing. Released as a free game on Steam to coincide with many of the April Fool’s jokes from our industry releases, Sega and Sonic Social Team have once again shown that they fully understand the characters, the fanbase and why. the series is so popular. Despite repeated attempts to kill him, Sonic the Hedgehog refuses to die.
Part visual novel, part Ace Attorney, and part meme-filled fanservice. The Murder of Sonic the Hedgehog is a short adventure where you take control of a new character whose first day on the job is marked by a mysterious party. on murder, but heavy on mystery.
It’s a pretty simple idea but absurdly exciting for us Sonic fans because you see so many characters interacting with each other while the writing team crams in as many Easter eggs and jokes as possible. One minute it’s a line from Tails, I’m sure most fans don’t even remember, and then it’s a recreation of Family Guy’s death pose.
There are a number of reasons why The Murder of Sonic the Hedgehog works, the main one being Sega’s continued willingness to listen to fans of the series (many of whom are now veteran developers or work for Sega) and let them do what they want. with laughter. sincerity….
Sonic’s social media manager, Kathy Chzhanovsky, says they “got a bunch of friends together and showcased” what would become The Murder of Sonic the Hedgehog (see image below), and at this point, I’m not even surprised. that Sega has accepted it. Sonic Mania was given to someone in the gaming fan community who made mobile ports of the original games, and Sega even gave away Sonic to be in their own Roblox game. One of the reasons Sonic continues to exist is because Sega knows that diehard fans bring him to life, even if they show him killing him.
The Murder of Sonic the Hedgehog also includes its audience. Deep cuts for longtime fans are mixed with a genuine understanding of each character to the point that even though none of them are voiced, you can absolutely hear every single one of them when they speak.
This idea goes beyond the game itself, as the project’s producer, Michal Szafrir, shared a background-free, dead-frame rendering of Sonic as a “launch day gift” and it’s already in use. i even put it that scene from Nicefellasbut a quick look at the Sonic community shows that they’ve already gone crazy over the image.
It’s hard to stress how much The Murder of Sonic the Hedgehog understands the fanbase without spoiling some of its best moments, but seeing Knuckles in a cowboy hat should tell you all you need to know, really. .
It also helps that it’s free and incredibly well written. A short and sweet experience, you just go on a journey as all the characters take control of the screen. There are some twists and even some interesting uses for centuries of sonic lore.
Killing Sonic the Hedgehog might look like a joke, sound like a joke, and be full of jokes, but it’s far from what you might imagine. This game Very real and we’re all better for it.
Sonic the Hedgehog is dead. Long live Sonic the Hedgehog.
