Remnant 2 completely changes your build choice and takes off accordingly

Remnant 2, a cooperative third-person shooter similar to Gunfire Games’ Souls, is due out later this year, and while PCGamesN was at GDC 2023 in San Francisco, we got a chance to get up close and personal with Remnant. : Since The Ashes sequel, and cooperative play has revamped its progression and build setup so much that you’ll never have the same character twice.

Shortly after Remnant 2 was featured at The Game Awards last year, Gunfire Games approached me about playing the game. To temper your expectations, I played all three playable classes, or archetypes as they’re called, multiple times at the same level and against the same boss. I haven’t played the cooperative game either, so it remains to be seen exactly how all of Remnant 2’s systems stack up when played alongside others.

If you haven’t played the original Remnant: From the Ashes, it’s important to note that Gunfire Games was inspired by some of the basic design principles of the genre defined by Dark Souls. Spatial awareness is key, so understanding what each enemy can do, how they can move, and what they will do when not in your peripheral vision is key. Combining that with solid shooting mechanics and a wide range of weapons is a lot of fun, because once you find yourself dodging enemies and their attacks with critical hits and using your abilities, everything in Remnant 2 starts to go awry.

It might take a while to get to that click point though, as the new passive abilities and archetype system keep you very intrigued. I was stuck playing mid-game with a full build (such is the nature of preview), but with a good tweak you’ll be there in no time.

The new archetype system is a very fun take on the original Remnant formula. I discovered the rapid-fire gunner and his fire rate (which is very similar to Cassidy’s ult in Overwatch 2), the heavy weapons and their damage-absorbing abilities, and the controller, which automatically became my favorite archetype just because he has a pet dog. Every play a dog gives you automatically falls into my line of sight, so I stick to that archetype.

The controller is great for solo play, as the dog can revive friends, target specific enemies, and give buffs to you and your team. Naturally, Remnant 2 will also offer a wealth of player build options, as two archetypes (three of which I played) can be combined into a single build. So you can be a shooter or a heavyweight with a quickdraw if you want.

I also received revolvers, rifles, machine guns, shotguns, and more for each loadout, and you’ll be able to mix and match any weapon you want with your dual archetype, creating truly unique experiences for your characters. Don’t just mix and match weapons with archetype pairs, as many weapon mods offer alternate firing modes, from grenade launchers to under-barrel shotguns.

In case it wasn’t already clear, between weapons, weapon mods, dual archetypes, passive perks, and abilities, you have countless build combos in Remnant 2. Hopefully, the pacing of the progression system is something I wasn’t really aware of. take the opportunity to feel like my midgame demo – match the breadth of options Remnant 2 wants to offer, because if that’s the case, there’s a great game in the mix that you’ll be coming back to again and again.

Playing a vertical portion of the game where long-term progression and customization are half the fun, it’s hard to fully understand how those parts of the game will work. That being said, the amount of customization that was shown to me while playing the game was unrealistic, so you should never think about unique settings and options.

While you wait for Remnant 2’s planned summer 2023 release on Steam and the Epic Games Store, our list of the best Souls and RPG-style games you can play right now is sure to keep you and your group of friends busy.
