Many modern FPS games have tried to bring back the spirit of the 90s, those serene days before Doom, Duke Nukem, Blood, etc. – but only a few have succeeded. For PC gamers, the decade that brought us Half-Life, Quake, and Extreme Paintbrawl was a very special time in life. If the developer intends to resurrect the more classic era of shooters, then, indeed, it has some very difficult steps to follow. However, there’s a new FPS available now via a free demo on Steam that could be right up there with Dusk and Prodeus when it comes to a faithful (and very fun) homage to the ’90s.
In Bloodhound, you play as a “gatekeeper” tasked with protecting the gates of hell from an invading cult of Astaroth. It’s like Doom in reverse: Instead of killing everything in Hell, your job is to kill everything that tries to kill everything in Hell.
Like Blood of the Monolith, Bloodhound’s locations are inspired by iconic horror and slasher movies, and enemies are based on demon worshipers and evil priests. There are plenty of weapons, plenty of upgrades, and an absolute pool of blood. Also taking inspiration from TimeSplitters, Bloodhound looks incredibly dynamic, with sharp 3D visuals and a very Free Radical-esque art style.
Another homage to the classic ’90s shareware model, Bloodhound’s first episode, “The First Day in Hell,” will be available completely free when it launches on March 30. You can go to Steam and wishlist Bloodhound right now.
Alternatively, you can try some great old games that will still be running on your PC in 2023, or maybe some of the best zombie games if you miss OG Doom’s destruction rifles and machine guns.
