Diablo 4’s Amazing Butcher Fight Is Exactly What Blizzard Wanted

Of all the enemies in Blizzard’s Diablo RPG, the Butcher remains a fan favorite. His penchant for fresh produce (especially meat) and his undying anger landed him in Sanctuary’s bloody history books, but he returns not just as the boss of Diablo 4, but as an ambush for random players. At an exclusive developer meeting in London, I asked Blizzard why.

Jusqu’à présent, le boucher a participé à tous les jeux Diablo, à l’exception de Diablo Immortal, mais étant donné qu’il s’agit d’un jeu de service en direct, he is likely to surrender to Westmarch à a given moment. He has even made appearances in other Blizzard worlds, including the now-defunct MOBA Heroes of the Storm (RIP).

While the developers could have easily created a full-blown, dramatic boss fight for a Diablo 4 character, they put a lot of effort into it. Very a different approach. As you roam the dungeons killing hordes, you’ll randomly encounter the Butcher, who can spawn in any dungeon, anytime, anytime. It’s this unpredictability, as Shelley explains, that dates back to the early days of Diablo.

The Butcher Showdown is a “great example” of how Sheley and her team tried to capture the darkness of Diablo 2 while keeping the smoothness and fluidity of Diablo 3. “There are a lot of great boss fights in Diablo 4 and we could have made it another boss fight.” dedicated to The Butcher, but we understand that, like so many other elements of Diablo, the really key point in this battle is the feeling of awesomeness and fear.

“It’s something that was really important to take over from Diablo 2, so we implemented that feeling into Diablo 4 in a different way than just cool combat.”

“It’s a great fight,” he tells PCGamesN with a laugh. “But it was a process of asking the question, ‘What is the true essence of what people [think of] when they say they love Diablo 2.” What exactly are they talking about in each individual case and how do we record it?

A huge red demon stands over the ghost of a dead character with a UI readout.

In my journey through the Diablo 4 beta, I have yet to face The Butcher; maybe I’m not fresh enough considering I play a slightly haggard necromancer. With every hallowed hall I pass and every bloody cathedral I walk through, I find myself taking a deep breath, wondering This moment. This tingling sensation in my back is exactly what I felt in Diablo 2, and it’s a very nice feeling.

If you too want to be attacked by a very evil demon, Diablo 4 is full of them. We’ve got a list of the best builds for each of the five Diablo 4 classes to help you find the location of the Diablo 4 world boss, Ashava, the biggest and most feared demon you’ll encounter in this phase of the challenge.
