Destiny 2 Lightfall’s difficulty changes take players away from the FPS game. Longtime Guardians point out that things like the Vanguard Ops, Nightfalls, Patrols, and Lost Sectors playlists are much more complex and a move away from the mindless work that has historically made Destiny 2 so popular.
Example: Several threads posted throughout the day on the r/DestinytheGame subreddit, each with over a thousand votes, are associated with an increase in difficulty. A post by Redditor themattigan titled “Loved Legendary Challenges” notes the Dares of Eternity run, which they describe as “I just got off an absolutely tedious job that lasted over 30 agonizing minutes after being chased by goblins, centurions and helpers.” , not to mention the stronger enemies that seem to have their health increased by around 1000%.
The headline post garnered more than 1.2 thousand votes. A post titled “Please, in the name of holy love… remove threshers (or reduce their damage) while on patrol” by user DevonT3 got 1,300 votes, and a post titled “Please make sure laser tripwires don’t kill us all in eleven” for Redditor Pfhortune’s Vanguard playlist also got 1,200 votes. Another post with 2,300 votes from Redditor AKA-VANISH-X is titled “If you want to make the game harder, make it more rewarding.” .
In a post by Redditor user Alastor369 titled “Challenges Return in Destiny,” a reference to Destiny 2 Game Director Joe Blackburn’s statement about increasing the difficulty levels in the game, it is noted that both are tired of doing and get complicated (bored) without increasing performance. The post received more than a thousand votes.
Taken together, the Reddit complaints seem to imply that Bungie missed the mark by increasing the game’s difficulty. These difficulty changes were a direct response to community feedback that much of the game’s content, patrols, and other activities Daily Vanguard Ops seemed too easy. Before Lightfall, if things got too difficult, players could simply increase their power level, which would make it easier to destroy enemies.
However, recent difficulty changes have also created power deltas for certain activities. Players cannot simply increase their power levels to play content that would otherwise be difficult for them. Instead, the game encourages you to reach a recommended power level that your power level does not exceed for any given activity. The game also makes the opponent’s power level much more difficult than the player’s power level. As a result, power levels become meaningless in these activities once players reach a certain level.
With all these complaints, it’s worth noting that the team increased the difficulty of some of these standard actions in response to player complaints that some of the content was too easy. For example, a Redditor post by ca-ca-cayde dated September 23, 2022 is titled “Strike playlist base difficulty must be increased.” This post got 2.2 thousand votes.
While it’s hard to gauge what Bungie should do to reassure players, the reality is that even longtime gamers find some of the most basic elements of the game too complex. Considering Bungie made Destiny 2 free to play a few years back, the in-game content feels like it should be. Further accessible to new players, not so inaccessible that it puts them off.
