More and more Steam users are using Nvidia RTX 4000 graphics cards, but AMD’s shiny new GPUs are having a hard time doing the same in stores. Steam’s latest hardware review shows an increase in ownership of the Nvidia RTX 4070 Ti and RTX 4080 as the top-rated card begins to lose ground.
The GeForce RTX 4000 and Radeon RX 7900 variants entered the race for the best graphics cards late last year, but the situation with the new generation is not entirely clear. First of all, Nvidia says that GPUs like the RTX 3060 are still part of the current-gen family, and AMD has yet to release anything that can compete with the RTX 4090. However, even though everything seems to be out Of sync, the Lovelace line seems to have the edge over AMD at the moment, with all three newcomers to the green team making Valve’s list of best GPUs.
Data from the latest Steam Hardware Survey shows that 0.19% of users now use the RTX 4080, with the RTX 4070 Ti scoring slightly lower at 0.17%. Furthermore, the popularity of the RTX 4090 increased by 0.07% since January, edging closer to the RTX 3050 Ti.
The RTX 4000 GPUs are not yet what we would call popular, as overall utilization is still below 1%. For context, the current hardware review champion is the Nvidia GTX 1650, with other RTX 3000 cards closer to the top of the popularity totem pole. However, this older budget option lost some users last month, so we may see a bigger shift towards the new cards in 2023.
However, when it comes to the AMD Radeon RX 7900 XT and XTX, there are no signs of life in the hardware revision as neither card has enough users to rank. One contributing factor could be the fact that we’re still waiting for FSR 3.0, Team Red’s answer to Nvidia DLSS 3 and Frame Generation. These last two tools can increase frame rates beyond their own capabilities, which can affect off-brand potential buyers.
Of course, Steam’s hardware revision is constantly changing, and Radeon RX 7900 graphics cards could soon be on that list. Again, it may seem like Nvidia is winning the race, but that may change as AMD fans start upgrading their older cards.
