The Sons of the Forest team laid out some of their plans to update the survival horror game in response to questions from the community, and it looks like there are plenty of welcome additions in the works. Since its release via Steam Early Access, the number of players for Sons of the Forest has shown just how high the demand is for a cannibal-infested sequel, and fans are expecting much more.
Sons of the Forest Discord hosted a Q&A with the Endnight Games development team and asked a lot of questions. Although the team is clearly reluctant to reveal plans for the future and emphasizes “We don’t want to promise features that don’t materialize”, he gave us an idea of what we can expect in the coming months.
Companion upgrades come first: Kelvin and Virginia are already useful in Sons of the Forest, but that’s not all. The team is working on other possible tasks for Kelvin, including “getting him to help build a wall around his base or fortify/repair his base if necessary.” As for Virginia, the team wants her to have “more courage if she has a gun and also depending on how many mutants and cannibals she has killed.”
Endnight wants these mutant, cannibalistic Children of the Forest to have more personality, too. She plans “more atmospheric activity for the cannibals around their villages” as well as “more types of structures they can live in to diversify the different camps.” there is at least one [enemy] a character not ready for the first run”, in development and potential for more, “including variations on some of the current enemies.”
Dedicated servers are a widely discussed topic, with Endnight saying, “It’s something we’re working on in the background, but we don’t have a date yet.” As for tools to deal with heartbreak, the team admits: “It’s always very difficult. We as developers expect people to be nice to each other, but unfortunately, that doesn’t happen.” She adds that the team is exploring options to help limit the risk of bereavement in the future.
A common complaint is the power of Sons of the Forest’s GPS locator: with its ability to instantly locate an entire story, some players worry that it will interfere with the natural rhythm of the game. end up rather than live/exist in the world,” says Endnight, “We have a lot of ideas out there, but there is no perfect solution yet. ”
The community asks about the possibility of faster vehicles, and Endnight says, “We have what we think is a great idea for this.” However, she says he’s hesitant to reveal any more details at this point “in case it’s not as fun as we thought or it doesn’t work well with the environment.”
What about wooden sleds? The much-loved instrument from The Forest isn’t currently part of its sequel, but it looks like a return could be on the cards. “That’s one of the great things about Early Access,” says Endnight. whether or not it was worth bringing back, but it became clear that players were missing out.
Other improvements discussed in the interview include expanded crafting, new build options and ghost blueprints, as well as a “more advanced cooking system” which the team says is currently in draft prototype form and “likely coming to the game in a future patch”. ”. Regarding the possibility of having more wildlife, the team says: “At this time, we have no plans to add bears or wolves. [which were mentioned in the question]but maybe other animals too.
