The Gjallarhorn is useful with its fire and forget ability, and the splash damage can finish off some builds, killing Calus. Thunderlord’s powerful exotic machine gun can also do both in a pinch, though he risks being exposed to Calus’s fire while he’s shooting and ammo can be an issue. If you ever get overwhelmed by mobs, use Strand to reposition yourself and throw a grenade or rocket at them as you walk.
During the first phase of the fight, Calus will throw fireballs at you from time to time. Basically, his behavior is similar to that of a large taken centurion, so you can fight as if that’s what you’re up against. Once you deal enough damage to him, the Tormentors will appear and shield him from damage until you kill them. He knocks them down and it will remove the shield from him so you can continue to damage him.

Once you’ve melted Calus’ first health bar, you may think the battle is over, but, as is often the case in Destiny, it’s just a red herring. Calus will respawn with full health on him, but now he will chase you with a sword, displaying behavior similar to Cabal Gladiator. His melee attacks are very strong and you must avoid them at all costs. Again, Strand claws are your friend. Occasionally he’ll put up a shield to protect himself, but that won’t make him invulnerable: strong weapons will counter him, so he’ll focus on staying alive, staying mobile, and dealing as much damage as possible.

Destiny 2 Calus Story
Once a decadent Emperor of the Cabal, Calus was overthrown by his much more ascetic adoptive son Ghaul and sent into exile on the Leviathan, a colossal living spaceship. The Leviathan drifted towards the galactic fringes, where Calus first encountered the Dark Fleet and the Witness in deep space. Calus, a longtime enemy of the Light, first encountered Calus during the Leviathan Raid in the main game of Destiny 2, where we removed the robotic appearance from him. Since then, the Vanguard has partnered with her daughter, Empress Kayatl, and the Cabal, who remain loyal to her.
