Do you feel guilty every time Sage yells “Should I?” All? in Valorant? Technically, it’s not your job to break through enemy lines and draw first blood in an FPS game, but you don’t have a choice. “Middle Seat Mom” Valorant is a jack of all trades; Riot gave us a soft-hearted healer and turned him into an aggressive battle sage.
In the current Valorant meta, Sage does it all, and it’s nice to have an Agent who isn’t a recognized Duelist in the game. In the Ascendant rankings, Sage is the second most picked Agent with a stellar win percentage, proving that Duelists are no longer the key to victory; players will prefer a support agent if they have a viable set of tools.
Despite the statistics, Valorant does not have another agent like Sage. No other support can heal and bring back the dead. In order to have a balanced roster, one of the three Valorant Agents planned for 2023 must be a healer.
Valorant needs more variety
Valorant has seven basic abilities that cover almost all Agents: Smoke, Molotovs, Stuns, Intelligence Gathering Gadgets, Movement Tactics, Crowd Control Gadgets, and Healing. For each power, there are at least three options other than healing.
Sage’s heal is perfectly balanced but powerful, while Skye’s heal, on the other hand, is powerful but untenable compared to Sage’s. The Initiating Agent can heal her teammates, but her dwindling oxygen tank of Mysterious Healing Juice isn’t enough. Even Sky needs a sage, which means that to keep her alive you must choose another healer. Skye’s large healing pool certainly makes up for her inability to heal herself, but she’s still a poor choice for solo play.
Because of this, Sage’s presence overshadows Sky, causing the latter to not play well. Why would someone bring Sky into a dynamic ranked match? Sure, he’s well suited to full-stack or pro play, but he loses in a tough qualifying race.
Skye may be a decent healer, but she’s no match for Sage, and that has nothing to do with her respawn abilities. Ultimately, Valorant’s healing protocol lacks variety. Sage is the best and only option for hybrid players, and that’s not exactly a good thing.
The resurrection will be a bonus.
It is clear that resurrection is the Sage’s unique power, just as Omen is the only agent capable of teleportation. But adding another resolution to the fight would be great now that Sage is almost three years old.
Sage fits nicely into Valorant’s brutal ranking, but five levels up, players pick Sage because of her respawn abilities. Once again, she is the only option. Resurrecting Kayo almost never helps, as the war machine often finds the most dangerous and vulnerable places to die, making it impossible to repair her core.
No one else in Valorant is capable of doing what Sage does, so she will always outperform other healers, unless Riot develops a similar medic: an autonomous agent that allows players to create their own style.
But it’s also worth noting that having more than three simple sage-type healers in Valorant could also spell disaster. If a five-stack duelist isn’t causing headaches, a lobby full of healers would be a nightmare, but that’s hardly a reason not to add variations to the protocol.
Riot has confirmed that Valorant will be getting a Launcher and a Guardian in 2023. Hopefully our Guardian is a wise joke, or at least has a healing pool that doesn’t discriminate.
