As support for the Avengers game is about to end, the former creative director of one of Marvel’s Avengers supporting studios has addressed the superhero game’s inevitable demise with a brief but blunt apology. The name of the live service did not meet the expectations of the publisher Square Enix, so it will gradually lose support over the course of this year.
Marvel’s Avengers was co-developed with Virtuos and one of the team members spoke out about what happened to the game and apologized to players for the unfortunate outcome. Co-Creative Director Cesar Virtosu currently works at Hexworks on The Lords of the Fallen, but he also worked on bosses and enemies for Marvel’s Avengers.
“Let’s just say it wasn’t an easy production,” says Virtosu. – I’m sorry about that.
This followed the news that Crystal Dynamics and Square Enix would be shutting down Marvel’s Avengers later this year after getting an insanely big discount on Steam, as well as the news of the shutdown.
This apology from Virtosu is part of a larger Edge Magazine interview (via GamesRadar), but unfortunately it won’t delay the game’s shutdown, which is expected sometime next month.
- March 31, 2023 – All credits will be converted to in-game resources, no new content, all cosmetics available for free.
- September 30, 2023 – Support for Marvel’s Avengers ends, but singleplayer and multiplayer modes will continue to be available.
Reception to Marvel’s Avengers was pretty mixed from the start. Square Enix has gone for a live service game with a constant stream of free updates backed by cosmetics and coins, but the impact this has had on the core gameplay loop seems to have detracted from the overall experience.
I argue that The Avengers singleplayer is pretty good, even if some of the live service’s mechanics slip away. If you can find it cheap or play it with a PC Game Pass subscription, I recommend you at least give it a try, especially after March 31 when all cosmetics will be free.
