Next week, another update for the military FPS Battlefield 2042. Update 3.2.1 includes a reversal of the “silent” changes made to the drum and extended magazines in the latest patch, as well as significant changes to launchers. In particular, the Tracer Dart has been heavily nerfed in Battlefield 2042.
The tracer dart has been featured in several Battlefield games and works in conjunction with blasters to launch a radio beacon that sticks to anything it touches. This transponder functions as a target for guided missiles launched from launchers such as the M5 recoilless rifle and the FGM-148 Javelin.
In many situations this is even more useful than the SOFLAM targeting scope, as the tracer dart stays on target long enough and can be used on non-vehicular targets, especially infantry. Mark a sniper’s nest with a tracer dart and chances are someone nearby with an M5 at the ready will send you a nice explosive package.
Patch 3.2.1 significantly reduces the wings of the tracer dart. The upgrade reduces the projectile speed of darts from 500 m/s to 250 m/s and adds bullet drop. These darts will fly twice as slow and still fall to the ground. If that wasn’t enough, Darts’ active time has been reduced from a full 40 seconds (which is admittedly long) to 12 seconds.
Additionally, with the release of the FGM-148 update, the Javelin will no longer be able to lock onto homing darts without line of sight.
EA/DICE say the changes are aimed at improving the skills needed to successfully use a tracer dart over long distances, and that SOFLAM is another option if you’re considering doing so. However, as mentioned above, SOFLAM only works to indicate aircraft or ground vehicle targets, so dismounted scouts will find it a bit easier to breathe.
The developer says the update should be released between February 13 and 17, but hasn’t given an exact date yet.
