Hogwarts Legacy mod adds new skin tones for players

Character creators are often criticized for not having dark skin tones, or for lighting up dark skin in weird and unrealistic ways (with the exception of The Sims). Sims 4). And the latest game to add to the roster of troubled character creators is Hogwarts Legacy, which has been criticized for being pale.

Several comments posted on Reddit to the game complained that the lack of particularly pale skin prevents them from recreating themselves as Hogwarts students: “I’m Nordic and pale to the point where people sometimes ask if I’m sick or something.” “, the message says. on the subreddit. “A little disappointed that I couldn’t recreate this.”

Hogwarts Legacy Mod solved the problem

The modder at the Nexus website wasted no time and did what the players wanted by creating a Hogwarts Legacy mod called “More and Darker Player Character Skins (opens in new tab)”, which has been downloaded over 11,000 times. As the mod’s name suggests, it also adds darker skin tones, but the lack of light tones was the complaint that led to its creation, and a major factor in the mod’s success – it was originally simply called “Pale Player Character Skins”. , and darker tones were added later. This mod is currently the most popular Hogwarts Legacy mod on NexusMods.

The lighter skin tone in the default Hogwarts Legacy character editor is indeed a bit tan compared to the paler than skin tone some people naturally have, at least as shown in the character creation screen (characters look slightly different in game, according to some of the comments on this topic – this is normal for such games, see Dragon Age Origins). The images below show the default paleness and darkness thresholds on the left and modified thresholds on the right:

The NPCs that inhabit Hogwarts are much more diverse than the teachers and students from the original films, at least when it comes to skin tones. Like some other popular fantasy works, the Harry Potter series has been widely criticized for excluding or stereotyping people of color (mainly with names like Cho Chang – the English equivalent of our “sinlin” – or a black character named Shacklebolt, which could be translated as the name of the piece of metal that keeps the shackles closed), and this was clearly in the minds of the developers of Hogwarts Legacy, who even included a trans character.

In this context, it may seem ironic to have a Day One Pallor mod, but the vast majority of comments I’ve seen express only a desire to see your own image in the game or create Draco Malfoy. – as a character.
