The creator of the popular but unauthorized Final Fantasy XIV mod has admitted that it includes malware capable of shutting down a user’s computer. Gshade, a mod that allows users to play MMORPG images, contains code that resets the PC if the mod is used for other purposes, such as creating additional mods that can change gameplay dynamics.

The use of mods in Final Fantasy XIV is strictly prohibited by Square Enix’s Terms of Service, which professional strike team UNNAMED_ learned just a week ago after using unauthorized plugins to win the race for world number one on Omega Protocol. Ultimate. Raid.

Gshade is also banned, but under normal circumstances it doesn’t do anything harmful. In fact, gamers with various forms of color blindness often use it to alter lighting and UI elements that would otherwise be indistinguishable.

However, the mod’s creator, who goes by the pseudonym Marot, has now revealed that he intentionally included malware in the Gshade code, as reported by GameRant. In the leaked Discord messages, Maroth claims that the malicious code is triggered when a third-party application tries to call functions from Gshade and reboots the client computer.

“It was supposed to be a lesson,” Maro tells another modder. “Anything could be in the payload, and you should be responsible for distributing it to people and releasing it.”

Unsurprisingly, this hasn’t been a simple modder-to-modder learning moment in the larger Final Fantasy XIV community. Marot is now banned on at least one Discord fanserver, and the FFXIV subreddit has stopped supporting Gshade. The mod has also reportedly been removed from the Github code repository pending investigation.

However, this episode serves as a warning and a reminder that mod games are always risky: if you don’t have the knowledge to look at a mod’s code line by line, there’s always a chance that something malicious is hiding. there.
