If you’re waiting for the next FFXIV expansion, you may have to wait a bit longer. While the latest installment in the critically acclaimed MMORPG story, Endwalker, released over a year ago in December 2021, it looks like we won’t have hands-on experience with FFXIV 7.0 in 2023, as confirmed by publisher Square Enix. there will be no expansions planned for it or Dragon Quest X this year.
We are currently in the middle of the post-expansion cycle for FFXIV Endwalker. Since the release of the remastered version of Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn in 2013, each expansion has been followed by five major updates (1 to 5), with minor updates in between.
Typically, the first three patches after the expansion act as code for the story that is told in the expansion’s main story (known in-game as MSQ or “Main Scenario Quest”). The last two patches generally define what happens next, though sometimes the format gets mixed up a bit, as required by the stories in question.
FFXIV 6.3 was released on January 10, followed shortly by 6.31, coinciding with the release of the fifth “ultimate” fight against Omega. In the past, there’s usually been three to four months between major updates, though that pace slowed down a bit during Endwalker when director Naoki Yoshida commented that he wanted to avoid undue stress on the team, especially during the holidays.
So it’s not too hard to guess that we won’t be seeing FFXIV 7.0 in 2023: some quick math suggests patch 6.4 should arrive around May or June, and patch 6.5 around September or October. Now, however, we have more official confirmation: Square Enix’s 2022 financial results report notes that there are “no expansion pack releases” next year. [are] planned” for its core MMOs, but says it will “focus on building user loyalty through various operational initiatives.”

Yoshida previously noted that the FFXIV 7.0 story planning event had ended, meaning the rough plan for the next installment had already been determined. He also confirmed that FFXIV 7.0’s level cap is 100 during the patch 6.3 live stream, though he says that going further in the future to level 110 or higher would be a bit on the fence.
FFXIV’s race to number one in the world has once again sparked controversy over the use of third-party tools.
