Wild Hearts will have 20+ monsters at launch, more will be added as free DLC

The EA Wild Hearts team is focused on “quality over quantity” as they aim to rival Capcom’s dominant Monster Hunter titles with “over 20 Kemonos in the game at launch.” There will also be more free monsters, as additional monsters are expected to be released after the game launches, with the game’s executive producer confirming, “All post-launch content will be free, including the new Kemono and more.”

Lewis Harvey, executive producer of Wild Hearts, took to Reddit for a dedicated AMA on the game ahead of its scheduled February 16 release date. In it, he talks about the number of main creatures you’ll be up against, how single and multiplayer work, the importance of elemental damage and armor, and whether we can expect Steam Deck support at launch.

Confirming that the game will come with over 20 kemonos, the large monsters that form the central opposition in Hearts of the Wild, Harvey says, “We haven’t revealed them all yet because we want to keep some as surprises, but we don’t.” I’m excited to see everyone’s reaction.” to our complete collection.” In a separate reply, he confirms that future Kemono and other downloadable content will be free, stating: “We have no plans to add MTX. [microtransactions]”.

That number only includes large creatures – there are plenty of smaller animals you’ll encounter, including deer and rabbits, and Harvey confirms that you’ll be able to catch and keep some of them as pets. However, you won’t be able to capture a large Kemono because “this concept doesn’t really fit with the game’s story.”

Kemono can fight, although this is apparently a “rare case”. Harvey also confirms that the elements will play a “huge role” in combat, with fire, ice, poison, and more all of which can be used against kemono, as well as being a huge threat to your characters. As such, you’ll want to craft armor that will help defend against such threats.

These armor sets are fixed regardless of your character’s body type, so don’t expect to see separate male and female styles, but Harvey notes that you can absolutely mix and match armor pieces and, in some cases, “change the look to suit you.” be more attractive.” “. human or kemono oriented”, which will also affect the stats.

At the end of the day, you want to make sure you’re building the perfect team for the end game. Harvey says that there will be a blog post soon with more details on what this entails, but he teases us: “Once the campaign is over, players will be given a new quest to search for a very dangerous new variant of Kemono that appears in the world. . [called] ‘Volatile Kemono’”. He adds that this leads to an even more difficult level, which is very similar to the difficulty of High Rank Monster Hunter and Master Rank.

In terms of locations, Azuma is made up of “four large explorable areas, each representing a different season,” with Harvey adding, “We also have the central city of Minato and other locations that we keep secret.” You can bring Tsukumo, small Karakuri creatures, to your hub, where you can upgrade them to help you hunt. You can also take one of them with you as a partner when playing solo.

If you choose to hunt with friends, Harvey confirms that the dynamic difficulty scaling ensures you face a fun and challenging battle that accommodates players joining or leaving the battle. Visitors can interact with their Karakuri, the Wild Hearts technology used for traps, tools, vehicles, and more, and create their own in their world, but only the host can actively destroy them. “It was specifically designed to prevent potentially toxic multiplayer behavior,” Harvey notes.

If you want to play Wild Hearts on Steam Deck, we have bad news for you. Harvey confirms that the game will not be Steam Deck compatible at launch, though he says “I have one and I want it just as much as you do! I hope we can achieve this in the future.” Meanwhile, players with an EA membership Play or Game Pass Ultimate can access a 10-hour trial of Wild Hearts starting February 13.

If you’re looking for some of the best co-op games on PC, we’ve got plenty to choose from, along with other great PC RPGs to keep you busy until Wild Hearts comes out. Meanwhile, the Monster Hunter Rise Sunbreak update brings back the fearsome flagship Iceborne, so there’s plenty of hunting on the horizon.
