It’s a bountiful harvest season on the lands of Dwarf Fortress, and this time the harvest isn’t bloated hooves, but cash. Brothers Tharn and Zach Adams released their monthly revenue report for their legendary colony management game, and January revenue, the first to include sales of the Steam remake of Dwarf Fortress, topped $7 million.
The exact amount for January is $7,230,123.58, or about £5,900,286.95. Not bad, especially considering that a month earlier, the brothers earned $15,635.07.
“So yeah, all the gears turned and that’s what we got, basically yesterday,” writes Tarn Adams on the Bay 12 Games forum. He says “just under half” will go toward taxes and paying for new staff and business expenses, so not all of it will go into Adams’ personal bank accounts.
However, according to Tarn, what was left “protected the future of the game” and allowed the brothers to bring in a new programmer to help with the coding, a task that until recently fell entirely to Tarn.
Zach Adams had a rather poetic response, touching in its modesty.
“The ending of the fairy tale is real, but you didn’t kiss the frog. You gave him money,” she wrote. “The gratitude you give us is part of our being right now. It takes us in the cars we drive. It sustains us like the food we eat. Now there is no more existence than what you have provided.
“When we leave this world, you will be the reason we will be remembered for,” he says.
It’s a deep gratitude that few can feel, let alone express to countless dedicated fans, and if anyone deserves it, it’s the Adams brothers and their families. Dwarf Fortress is a passion project that they have been working on for over 20 years.
