The 4.01 patch for The Witcher 3 simplifies the use of ray tracing

If you’ve been struggling to get ray tracing effects to work without dropping the frame rate in The Witcher 3 since the release of the new and improved edition of the RPG, there’s good news in the latest update. Patch 4.01 for The Witcher 3 includes some stability and performance improvements, including a new ray tracing tweak that sacrifices fidelity for better frame rates.

The latest Witcher 3 update adds a new “performance mode” for ray-traced global illumination. Developer CD Projekt Red claims that this setup makes using the fancy lighting effect less costly in terms of system resources by “preferring performance over range and accuracy”.

In other words, ray-traced lighting effects won’t travel as far from your point of view and reflections might be a little less sharp, but in return you’ll get smoother frame rates and lower input lag. For gamers with nothing less than the best graphics card on the market, this can be the difference between using the new ray-traced global illumination and turning it off.

The latest patch also fixes an issue with screen reflections, a sort of lightweight ray tracing technique for applying reflections to a scene. This didn’t work on the PC version of The Witcher 3 Enhanced Edition – players could enable the setting in the menu, but it did nothing. This is now fixed and CD Projekt Red notes that if you enable it, you may see a performance hit after applying the fix.

Patch 4.01 also fixes some issues with various quests (such as an invisible obstacle preventing Geralt from fighting the second Wildcarl in the King’s Gambit quest), fixes some Arabic localization issues, adds new localized Korean and simplified Chinese. covers of Orianna’s “Lullaby of Woe” and more. You can find the full patch notes on the official site.
