The new Nvidia RTX 3060 Ti hit town last year and it proved to be faster than the original factory overclocked model. The new SKU combines the same GA104 GPU as its predecessor with GDDR6X memory, but therefore consumes more power.
It’s strange to see an Nvidia RTX 3060 Ti in 2023 while enthusiasts wait for the RTX 4060 to enter the race for the best graphics cards. Of course, the green team has already warned us that it will, stating that Ampere is still “part of the family” when the RTX 4090 launches. According to tests by ithardware, the updated KFA2 (Galax) RTX 3060 Ti GDDR6X outperforms the Asus TUF OC, a factory-overclocked 1755 MHz graphics card (via Videocardz). While the newcomer doesn’t completely leave the original behind, the fact that it’s faster is an achievement in itself, and overclocking memory and cores could widen the gap even further.
It should be remembered that as far as modifications are concerned, the GDDR6X RTX 3060 Ti does not differ much from the original. It has the same number of 4864 CUDA cores and GA104 chip, but increases the memory speed from 16 Gbps to 19 Gbps. However, the setup comes with power caveats, as the setup consumes 25W more power. It’s not critical, but if you’re planning to upgrade a low-spec platform, it could be critical.
The graphics card scene is still waiting for a “new” entry-level competitor, and even the Nvidia RTX 4070 Ti manages to miss the midrange. Rumors suggest that the RTX 4060 Ti will fill that gap soon, but its price and performance could prevent it from truly replacing the RTX 3060 Ti. Nothing is set in stone when it comes to Team Green’s plans for GPUs, though, so it’s best to wait and see what the gaming PC giant has in store for 2023.
