What is the release date for Starfield? Officially, it was supposed to take place in November 2022, but Bethesda announced the postponement of Starfield to 2023. Luckily, we got a pretty decent demo of the new open-world game at the Xbox and Bethesda show this summer.
We haven’t heard much about the game since then, leaving the Starfield community a bit starved for new information, but we’re sure Bethesda won’t be keeping us in the dark for long. Anytime Starfield’s release date approaches, it could be one of the best PC games out there, so it’s worth the wait. Here’s what we know about Starfield so far.
Starfield Release Date
Starfield’s release date is set for the “first half” of 2023, with Microsoft’s Matt Booty indicating that it will release after Arkane’s Redfall. Starfield is getting a standalone showcase that gives it some well-deserved singleplayer immersion, and hopefully a specific release date.
Starfield was originally slated for a November 11, 2022 release, but in May 2022 Bethesda announced that the space game has now been pushed back to 2023. The release date has been confirmed on the official Starfield support page, stating that the open-world game will be coming exclusively to Xbox and PC in the first half of 2023.
A release date for Starfield will be announced very soon, according to Bethesda, with a “special gameplay event” also on the horizon.
Starfield Pre-order
Starfield is available for pre-order at select retailers. It is currently available for pre-order via GAME in the UK and GameStop in the US.
Starfield Game Pass is also relevant; it’s part of PC Game Pass (as well as Xbox Game Pass for console players), which means you’ll have instant access to open-world gameplay from day one. Game Pass subscribers don’t need to pre-order, and we think they’ll at least be able to pre-download Starfield before its release.
Is Starfield exclusive to Xbox?
Starfield will be exclusive to Xbox and PC as Microsoft agreed to a $7.5 billion deal to buy ZeniMax Media, Bethesda’s parent company.
In a blog post announcing the acquisition, Xbox boss Phil Spencer mentions his excitement for upcoming Bethesda games, “some announced and many unannounced,” including Starfield.
How to play
The original Starfield trailer was released in 2018. We have since received a Starfield trailer in June 2021 and a much larger gameplay demo in June 2022.
We recently saw gameplay footage of Starfield showing how the dialog and persuasion mechanics will work, as well as additional footage of spaceflight narrated by Todd Howard (video below). It’s also been revealed that Starfield could be getting an adorable and slightly creepy survival mode.
Star field features
At the Xbox and Bethesda Games Showcase 2022, we took an in-depth look at Starfield’s mechanics and systems. The game demo begins on an insect-infested planet where the player mines iron from a cave before heading to the research lab on Crete. Here we find that the Crimson Fleet, one of the many factions in Starfield, is looting treasure. These pirates are hostile, which gives us a chance to see some of Starfield’s weapons in action, like the Grendel machine gun. Combat is very similar to Fallout 4, except there’s no VATS system to rely on.
After a briefing from the faction leader Starfield Constellation about the artifact we dug up, we meet the other faction leaders who tell us what they’re fighting for. We also see some more hostile aliens, ranging from jawed dinosaur-like creatures to creepy horrors lurking in the corridors of abandoned facilities.
Game Director Todd Howard then talks about the character creation tool, as well as Starfield’s many stories and traits, with which your astronaut can begin their journey into space. The gameplay gives us an insight into Starfield’s abilities and a brief introduction to Starfield Research Lab projects.
If you’re wondering what the dialogue will look like in Starfield, we’ve got some (hopefully) encouraging details. First, the classic silent protagonist from BGS returns, which is probably helpful considering the game has around 250,000 lines of dialogue. You’ll also speak in the first person and choose from a variety of dialogue options presented in simple sentences. There’s a new persuasion system where you spend points in a series of linked trades in hopes of achieving your desired result before your hospitality expires.
Finally, there is a section dedicated to building the Starfield base, including the ability to design and operate your own starship. In addition to space combat, this spaceship will be useful for exploring Starfield’s many planets in the known universe, according to Howard there are over 1000. In an interview with IGN developer, Howard confirms that there is procedural generation in Starfield. , but the Bethesda team “did more manual labor on this game, in terms of content, than on any other game.”
If you’re looking for more details on the space game world, Bethesda has also unveiled some concept art for several of the cities in Starfield that we’ll be able to visit, including the largest colony in the game, New Atlantis. Fortunately, it seems that these large settlements are just the highlights, and there will be many other cities and even smaller metropolitan areas to visit. If you’re wondering how long Starfield has been around, we’ve got a few theories to check out.
Starfield Multiplayer
Will there be multiplayer in Starfield? Short answer: no. The long answer is still no, but if you need proof, we’re directing you to this 2020 Develop: Brighton Digital conference, where Todd Howard confirms that Starfield will be a single player experience. If you don’t want to watch everything, Howard makes a reference to Starfield’s multiplayer (or lack thereof) around the 45th minute mark.
That’s all we know about Starfield’s release date. There’s still a long way to go until November and we can’t wait for more news on what could be one of the best PC games out there. Be sure to check out our Starfield interview with a former Bethesda developer for more on the scope of the project. We also have confirmation that the Elder Scrolls fan NPC is set to return to Starfield. Finally, check out the latest news on The Elder Scrolls 6 and The Witcher 4 if you’re looking for more epic RPGs yet to be released.
