It looks like Melty Nvidia GPU adapters are back on the menu, as third-party RTX 4090 cables would overheat. Although Cablemod’s rectangular solution helps solve the problem, the design flaw can still affect enthusiasts using the workaround.
The Nvidia RTX 4090 tops the charts in terms of performance, but adapter issues hamper its success in benchmarks. Sure, it’ll gobble up the latest PC games and deliver effortless 4K gameplay, but that feat was initially marred by what could be a potential fire hazard.
Again, third-party solutions like the CableMod 12VHPWR Right Angle Adapter can prevent the obvious design flaw, but new reports show the risk still exists. On Reddit, Humble-Brilliant-654 shares images of the fried-wire outlet, but doesn’t go into detail about the setup involved (via Videocardz).
The last point is more important than you might think because Nvidia says that the problem is caused by bad connectors. Of course, even if you make sure the adapter is fully inserted, the connector’s location and design means it can come loose as you try to manage the cables, potentially melting inside the case.
CableMod has already contacted Humble-Brilliant-654 and the company says that the RTX 4090 involved is fortunately in good condition. The adapter maker says it’s actually replaced GPUs in the past, so even in the worst case, support seems to extend to customers.
It’s worth noting that the issue with the Melty RTX 4090 adapter isn’t widespread, with Nvidia saying it was “aware of 50 cases worldwide” in its initial November announcement. There’s no reason to believe that many more users have been affected by this problem since then, so if you’re considering buying a flagship GeForce graphics card, you should probably consider the green team’s installation tips.
