What do you get if you put an RTX 4090 in a ’90s case? Well, if this Nvidia GeForce Garage project is right for you, you get a crude gaming PC that looks like it should be running Windows 98. The build in question looks exactly like a setup from over 20 years ago, but it’s brand new. . courage will not force you to stick to the classics of computer games.
The best gaming PC builds often live on in trendy new cases, and for good reason. First of all, high-end graphics cards are now almost the size of a PlayStation 2, and the extra space and bays will allow enthusiasts to better manage cables and not create a spaghetti monster. Does that mean we don’t want the little beige towers to come back in 2023? Absolutely not, and Nvidia seems to be in the same retro style.
In the latest GeForce Garage installment, host Dwight Lackmann transforms an old eMachines desktop tower into a monstrous RTX 4090 rig while maintaining a 20th century aesthetic. The crafty builder also packs an Intel Core i7-13700K processor, 32GB of RAM, and a 2TB SSD into an old case, just in case, so you’ll be up to date with the latest Steam games when it all hits 11.
Intentionally or not, the Nvidia eMachines sleeping machine is actually a bit scary. A custom-built EKWB water cooler filled with metallic purple liquid boils in the center of its narrow innards, almost looking like the monster from the Goosebumps episode. I’m not saying I think this PC will draw gamers into Doom for real, but it definitely looks like something you’d see on a ’90s kids’ horror show.
Rather than just cram expensive parts into an eMachines chassis and hope for the best, Dwight subtly modifies the bottom of the case to include huge exhaust fans, which in turn help the RTX 4090 breathe. The AIO cooler also uses a 3D-printed bracket that adds space between it and the power supply, but everything else seems to fit easily into the case.
Dwight concludes the episode by sharing test information, and the stealth system can hit 120fps in The Witcher 3 while keeping the internal temperature at 70°C. An incredible feat given the limited interior space, but you can walk away and use a cheaper card like the RTX 4070 Ti, as long as you’re dedicated enough to set up a similar system out of nostalgia.

GeForce Garage is off to a great start, so look forward to more creative releases from the channel throughout 2023 as it arrives and looks like it might blow up planets.
