The Plague Tale Requiem patch adds ray tracing, but only for shadows.

Plague Tale Requiem updates are out and now you can use ray tracing to enhance blurry shadows in this stealth horror game. While Asobo Studio’s gothic adventure already seems appropriate, this technology could be a reason to revisit the 2022 sequel, especially if you’ve just picked up a new graphics card like the Nvidia RTX 4070 Ti.

Ray tracing is a great way to implement the best graphics card options, putting even the RTX 4090 to the test. However, AI enhancement tools like DLSS 3 and Frame Generation can help you boost frame rates. with the feature enabled, which means you don’t necessarily need to turn the settings down to adjust.

According to the A Plague Tale Requiem patch notes, the update implements “Ray Tracing in Graphics Settings” with a new game-binding option to toggle gameplay. Nothing has been said about other improvements related to the rendering technique, but since the best medieval games usually include mediocre visuals, it makes sense that RT shadows would come first.

However, the notes also explicitly mention ambient occlusion, but it cannot be found in the game’s settings, suggesting that it will be part of another patch, as an earlier “RTX On” trailer implies that Plague Tale: Requiem will have more ray tracing settings. However, this could be integrated into the existing shadow options, meaning the two are enabled together.

It’s worth remembering that ray tracing comes with some performance caveats, and Plague Tale: Requiem’s frame rate will suffer greatly with this setting enabled. However, if you’re using a newer graphics card like the one featured in our Nvidia RTX 4080 review, tricks like frame generation should help make up for the losses. DLSS 3 nearly doubled our frame rate during testing, so it’s possible to exceed 60fps with RT shadows enabled.

Things may work differently if you are using one of the Team Red GPUs, such as the AMD Radeon RX 7900 XT, as enabling ray tracing has a significant performance hit and frame rates are halved on some areas. Visually, the differences are minor, so keep that in mind if you’re trying to balance settings without using AMD FSR.

We hope Asobo Studio continues to expand the setting of A Plague Tale: Requiem with more updates, as ray tracing can update the horror game’s dramatic landscapes, architecture, and environments. Even if you don’t like fancy visuals, we recommend returning the series simply for its story.
