Stadia is almost a distant memory, but Google’s latest giveaway means it will live on as a PC controller. That’s right, the streaming platform’s gamepad will soon work with a regular device, whether you’re using it to play games on Steam or browse your amassed collection of Epic Game Store goodies.
We’ve got quite a bit of choice when it comes to the best PC controller options, but there’s something lovely about the Google Stadia Gamepad. Maybe it’s the orange accents below the analog sticks, or maybe it’s the black and white colors that give it a contrasting look. It would be a shame to see a device go to waste as soon as the streaming service bites the dust, though, and it looks like that’s thankfully not going to happen.
In a recent tweeterGoogle confirms that a new “self-service” tool will unlock the Stadia Controller’s Bluetooth functionality, meaning you’ll soon be able to connect it to your PC, laptop, or even Steam Deck. The tech giant hasn’t said whether it will release the tool after service ends on January 18, but it will save the handheld from ending up in a dusty old box a day later.
Before the announcement, there was a risk that the Google Stadia controller would become electronic waste destined to end up in a landfill if it was not returned to the company. Now that the gamepad has a definite future, there’s a chance it could be widely used on PC platforms, offering a similar design to the PlayStation DualSense but combined with other peripherals and white pieces.
If you don’t already have a Stadia controller, you can probably buy a used controller for a low price. On eBay, the pads sell for around $30, which isn’t too bad considering the build quality and striking aesthetics.
