System requirements are no longer a mystery as Square Enix has just announced the latest PC specs. While a gaming PC with an older Nvidia GTX GPU can apparently play a role, you may need one of the newer graphics cards on the market to avoid PS3-era visuals.
Luminous Productions divides Forspoken’s PC specs into three categories: Minimum, Recommended, and Ultra. This framework is becoming a standard when it comes to modern requirements, as it helps developers provide recommendations along with realistic performance expectations. However, the studio didn’t provide sample settings in its guide, which could hurt anything trying to truly balance visuals and frame rates.
Minimum | advised | Ultra | |

You won’t need the best gaming PC to run Forspoken, but using older hardware will limit gameplay to 720p 30fps. As a base, according to the developer, you will need a GTX 1060 level GPU paired with an Intel i7-3770 or AMD 1600 CPU. Sounds reasonable, right? Sort of, but 16GB of RAM is a misplaced joy, as budgets and older machines tend to contain less memory.
If you’d rather not turn Square Enix’s shiny new adventure into a 2007 remake, be sure to aim for Forspoken’s recommended specs, but you’ll obviously have to make do with sluggish visuals. Luminous recommends using an RTX 3070 graphics card, an Intel Core i7-7800K processor, and 24GB of RAM to hit 1440p at 30fps, which isn’t ideal considering we’re talking about PS4 performance levels at what we’d call a respectable machine.
Unsurprisingly, the Ultra’s system requirements are for gaming in 4K, but you’ll also be able to really enjoy this fluid sport at 60fps. Unfortunately, achieving this feat requires one of the best graphics cards out there, namely the recently released Nvidia RTX 4080 or something like that with 16GB of VRAM.
The expense doesn’t end there, as the Ultra’s spec sheet has a relatively new Intel i7-12700K processor and 32GB of RAM. Again, Luminous didn’t include any of the Forspoken PC builds in its recommendations, so it’s hard to say if some premium builds will have to sacrifice accuracy for performance’s sake.
In terms of storage, you’ll need to free up 150GB of space to start Forspoken, and you may even need to get rid of your trusty old mechanical hard drive. The “Recommended” and “Ultra” requirements suggest you’ll need to upgrade to an SSD, and the latter even specifically mentions using an NVMe drive. Choosing the best SSD for gaming will save you from worrying about all of the above, but it can give anyone a headache with a cheap, cheap setup.
The PC specs should help prevent performance degradation, but we have to test them ourselves to determine the best Forspoken setup on a PC. Hopefully we can share ways to increase the frame rate without sacrificing the experience, so check back as soon as Square Enix’s latest adventure comes out.
