Hogwarts Legacy Steam Deck compatibility has been officially established as WB Games says that the Harry Potter game will be tested at launch. That means you’ll be able to run an open-world RPG on the go, but its visuals and performance may be in line with Hagrid’s PS1 ethos.
On paper, the system requirements for Hogwarts Legacy seem to make a high-end gaming PC sweat, and even a possible Steam Deck 2 probably won’t meet the recommended specs. What we’re talking about here, though, is that the action-RPG will be “awesome on deck” from day one. Sounds too good to be true, right? Well, it happens whether you think it’s possible or not.
On Twitter, WB Games confirmed that Hogwarts Legacy will be Steam Deck compatible from the start. Theoretically, you should be able to walk through the magical gardens of a private school without any problems, but it’s worth keeping in mind that control isn’t entirely problem-free.
If you’re picky about frame rates and can’t settle for less than 60fps, then Hogwarts Legacy on Steam Deck might disappoint you. Although Avalanche Games does not list a portable version on its PC specs list, it does require a fairly powerful GPU to run the setup. Sure, the AMD Deck APU can handle plenty of new games, especially if you’re playing on your 720p display, but you won’t necessarily be able to boost frame rates.
Ultimately, playing Hogwarts Legacy on Deck is likely to come with a few caveats, whether it be frame rate drops or choppy graphics. Since the game will be running on an Nvidia GTX 960 gaming PC, it should be possible to hit 60fps if you stick to low settings. However, the scaled-down 720p image may not impress some enthusiasts, and using the best Steam Deck and monitor can turn the game into a PlayStation Demake.
Of course, the above is just a guess, and we have to wait for the Hogwarts Legacy release date to confirm our performance suspicions.
The creator of the Harry Potter series, JK Rowling, has made several transphobic comments on social media in recent years. Although WB Games claims that “JK Rowling was not directly involved in the game’s creation”, it is based on her work and it is not yet clear if she will receive royalties from its sales. If you want to find out more about transgender equality or want to show your support, here are two major charities we recommend checking out: the National Center for Transgender Equality in the US and Mermaids in the UK.
