Intel flaunts a 6GHz gaming processor and refuses to use the official name

It looks like Intel just announced its upcoming Core i9-13900KS, a gaming processor that can hit 6GHz without overclocking. While Team Blue is keeping official product names under wraps for some reason, the gaming PC giant is more than happy to flaunt its impressive in-camera clock speeds.

We already have several Intel Raptor Lake chips in the race for the best gaming processors, but the Core i9-13900KS should take the lead. Leaked benchmarks suggest that the newcomer can offer 9% better multi-core performance than an unlocked Core i9-13900K and apparently 47% faster than the previous generation flagship from Alder Lake.

In Intel’s new “Sneak Peek” video, gaming industry technology marketing manager Jason Xie reveals an unnamed 6GHz processor they “can’t name yet.” The video confirms that it’s the same chip that’s been mentioned in previous product events, but doesn’t call it the Core i9-13900KS.

The demo rig pairs a mysterious Raptor Lake processor with a rather conventional Corsair AIO liquid cooler and Asus Z790 motherboard, and Xie says no “tricks” are used to achieve high clock speeds. The proof of success is presented by the Intel XTU software, which clearly shows that the chip runs at 6 GHz.

Of course, Xie correctly cautions that maintaining 6GHz with a Raptor Lake CPU depends on things like power budget, temperature, or even operating system limitations. However, the CPU will hit that speed as advertised, and that should help put some pressure on AMD’s upcoming Ryzen 7000X3D.

We’re still waiting for the official release date and price of the Core i9-13900KS, with Intel apparently reserving its top-end processor. However, the performance demo above could bode well, as it could signify that it’s almost ready to enter the PC gaming scene.
