The Razer Kiyo Pro Ultra looks more like a DSLR than a webcam

One thing that companies have taken away from 2020 is the need to get serious about webcams if we want to spend more time communicating with each other through the virtual world. The Razer Kiyo Pro Ultra is about as serious as it gets, being the first webcam with 4K resolution at 60fps without compression.

To be clear, this isn’t the first 4K/60fps webcam on the market. The Logitech Brio preceded it by almost five years, while the Elgato Facecam Pro launched in late 2022. The Razer Kiyo Pro Ultra stands out from the crowd with the way it handles compression, which means it’s not there thanks to the sensor. irregular. and NV12 format.

Razer says the sensor is twice the size of other webcams, at 1/1.2-inch, a few millimeters smaller than the 1-inch sensors you get on DSLRs. This makes the webcam a bit monstrous compared to previous iterations, but it captures four times as much light for a crisp, clean image. Extended HDR is available to make colors more vibrant, but this option only limits you to 30fps.

There’s also “advanced” face tracking, a portrait mode that blurs background bokeh, and onboard memory so you can customize your profiles and take them with you. What I like best, however, is the built-in privacy shutter, which is activated by rotating the case. It doesn’t replace the separate lid that came with earlier models that’s still in the box, but it’s a big improvement considering the lid is pretty easy to lose.

While the specs don’t give it away, its price of $299.99 indicates that it’s aimed squarely at users who want one of the best webcams around. After all, regular users will always rely on compression from Google Meet, Zoom, etc., and the only thing that stands in the way of streamers is their bitrate. It will be available on the Razer Store starting January 5.
