AMD commented on recently identified temperature issues with the Radeon RX 7900 XTX, and his words can be comforting to anyone who has invested in a next-generation graphics card. The design flaw in question would cause throttling and hot spots at 110°C, but Team Red claims it affects a small percentage of GPUs.
This generation’s top contenders for graphics cards can’t seem to escape the difficulty of running the grilled variety, as the Nvidia RTX 4090 arrived with its own power adapter. Although the AMD Radeon RX 7900 XTX thermal throttling issues are unlikely to pose a fire hazard, the findings published by Igor’s Lab have raised performance issues in the community.
In a new video posted by PCWorld, AMD SVP Scott Herkleman answers questions about the Radeon RX 7900 XTX reports. In response, Scott Herkleman says the root cause is a lack of water in a “small percentage” of graphics card vapor chambers, somewhat downplaying the idea that thousands of devices would be affected.
The senior vice president says that although the issue is minor, the company is taking the situation very seriously. Herkleman promises that if you’re unfortunate enough to have a problem, customer service will “take care of you no matter what,” which means the return process is relatively straightforward.
Again, the issues specifically affect reference AMD XTX cards, so if you’re using a custom variant or a Radeon RX 7900 XT, you won’t have to worry about vapor chamber shenanigans. While time will tell how many GPUs are actually affected, Herkleman’s comments suggest that things are under control to some degree.
