Brace yourself: Asus just announced the “world’s first 540Hz gaming monitor.” The innovative display combines a high refresh rate with low latency to give FPS gaming enthusiasts an edge, but it also has some impressive audio tricks up its sleeve.
Asus already ranks high on our list of the best gaming monitors, as its ROG Swift PG259QNR display offers 1080p 360Hz playback. If you’re unfamiliar with esports specs, the thought of a low-res display might be daunting, but pixel swapping helps give panels silky smooth high refresh rate capabilities that currently can’t be achieved at 1440p. or 4K.
Announced at the Asus CES 2023 launch, the ROG Swift Pro PG248QP brings 540Hz gaming to the table using a TN panel instead of an IPS display. In theory, the shiny new screen should look better than its predecessor thanks to its wide color gamut, but you might be too busy swooning over its speedy superpowers to tell the difference.
Of course, it’s wise to use your eyes and ears when playing the best competitive FPS games, and ROG Swift Pro covers all the bases. The monitor uses a built-in ESS DAC to deliver near-zero latency surround sound, turning your senses into lethal weapons for esports.
If you don’t like competitive gaming or your graphics card can’t boost the frame rate up to 540Hz, you can try Asus’ alternative, the ROG Swift OLED PG27AQD. The display can’t quite match its counterpart for refresh rate, as it’s downscaled to 240Hz to retain its native 1440p resolution, but its OLED capabilities and anti-reflective coating are just as desirable.
We’re still waiting for an official release date for both monitors, but Asus says the ROG duo should arrive before the end of Q2 2023. Looking for a GPU that can give this 540Hz behemoth the visuals you need? Check out our Nvidia RTX 4070 Ti review to see if it measures up.
