GPU Expert Spotted An Annoying AMD Radeon RX 7900 XTX Design Flaw

A GPU expert has discovered an annoying design flaw in the AMD Radeon RX 7900 XTX that causes hot spots of up to 110°C. The temperature issue can affect thousands of reference RDNA 3 graphics cards, but it doesn’t appear to be specific to custom variants or the RX 7900 XT.

The Radeon RX 7900 XTX debuted last month to compete with the RTX 4080, and since then the Nvidia RTX 4070 Ti has joined the battle against AMD’s best graphics card competitor. Of course, Team Red isn’t the only company plagued with design issues, with the RTX 4090 arriving with a melted cable issue.

Igor’s lab discovered that AMD Radeon RX 7900 XTX thermal throttling issues are related to a graphics card vapor chamber issue (via Videocardz). In a brief response to the reporter’s findings, AMD acknowledges the flaw in the reference design, stating that it affects “a limited number of cards sold.”

While AMD claims the impact is limited, sources close to Igor’s lab say it affects “4-6 batches”. In an email, the integrators say they have returned more than 300 graphics cards, but thousands are expected to suffer the same fate.

If you own one of the Radeon RX 7900 XTX cards described above, AMD suggests that you contact support. The statement does not indicate whether defective devices will be returned, the correspondence shared by Igor’s Lab implies a return or an exchange. However, you’ll supposedly have to pay shipping costs, which could add insult to injury for affected users.
