Destiny 2’s Iron Banner is back, but this time the fan-favorite quest features an added layer of PvE gameplay. Fortress, a new Cabal themed mode, is similar to Control, a standard area capture mode similar to modes popular in many online shooters. However, in the new Destiny 2 Season 19 Iron Banner, players must not only fight each other in an FPS game, but also destroy turrets to capture “high value areas” that are worth more points than other areas.
Iron Banner is a two-season Crucible event that includes special game modes, gear, and rewards unique to this quest. In Crucible Management, players earn points by capturing areas. Guardians receive two points for each area they control in each time interval. When a team controls two zones, the game treats them as a zone advantage and awards four points at each time interval. When a team captures all three, it is a power play and the team is awarded six points for each interval.
In Stronghold, the rules are similar to Control, except that twice per match, the Cabal drop pod will land at one of the capture points. Players must then fight each other and Cabal turrets to gain control of the area. The team that manages to capture the Cabal area earns more points in less time.
This new mode is also tied to the story of the game. In the past, Cabal Empress Caiatl, who is now allied with the Vanguard, has expressed interest in the Crucible. When fans heard this, some speculated that they wished she was involved with Iron Banner, possibly even voicing her activity. It seems that the inclusion of Cabal turrets in Iron Banner was a way of honoring her reputation as a warlord by allowing her to engage in PvP combat on Vanguard’s behalf.
