HW Test: The Razer Viper Ultimate gaming mouse is an all-around luxury

It doesn’t take long to introduce players to the Razer brand like their Viper mouse, which has been one of the most popular of 2019. However, at the same time, it has since undergone improvements, the most important of which was an update to the main switches, which drew some criticism from the first generation. In addition to the wired and mini versions, it was the Viper Ultimate that won the hearts of many players. Let’s look at the reasons.

  • Interface: USB, hyper-speed wireless
  • Motion Sensor: Optical
  • Sensor: Razer Focus+
  • Maximum sensor sensitivity: 20,000 characters per inch, 650 frames per second
  • Response time: 0.2 ms
  • Source of power: built-in battery, up to 70 hours
  • Number of programmable buttons: 8
  • Length Width Height: 126.73mm x 57.6mm x 37.81mm
  • weight: 74 grams
  • Cable: Knitted, 1.8 meters
  • Ergonomics: symmetric
  • Price: CZK 3299 (Razer.com)

Convenient charging, accurate sensors

This is, of course, a higher-end gaming mouse that you’ll recognize from the high-quality stylish packaging with crisp padding, thank-you notes on translucent paper, a detailed color manual, and so on. Above all, however, in the package you will find, in addition to the mouse, a detachable braided cable and a USB transmitter integrated into the body of the mouse, as well as a docking station, which is one of the most distinctive elements. the entire system. The cable included in the kit can be connected either to the mouse if you want to use it in the most reliable “wired” mode, or vice versa, to which you then insert the key and bring it closer to the mouse itself to eliminate possible signal problems. The docking station has an interesting shape, anti-slip treatment on the bottom, as well as its own RGB lighting, which not only looks good (illuminates the table or the area under it), but also indicates the battery status or the mouse is charging. At the same time, it supports fast charging, so you can use the mouse for hours after a few minutes of charging. The fact that the cable has a relatively special sheath around the connector can be dangerous, so it cannot be replaced universally.

The design of the mouse itself feels solid, despite its amazing lightness (given that the mouse has a built-in battery). The shape is adapted for both right-handers and left-handers, so in addition to the general symmetry, it is equipped with pairs of side buttons on both sides. The main mouse buttons are slightly rounded and raised to the edges so that the finger does not slip off. Also, since this is the second, improved generation of this mouse, the buttons look solid and crisp. Their compression is controlled by extremely precise optical sensors with a response time of 0.2 milliseconds. Combined with the Razer Focus+ optical sensor and Hyperspeed Wireless transmission (reportedly 25% faster than other wireless technologies), the mouse behaves wirelessly almost indistinguishably from wired mice.

Smart and strong

The mouse itself also features RGB lighting, specifically a rainbow logo on the back that breathes or pulses red as a warning when the mouse is low on battery, and a small LED at the bottom to help you find out what color you have your DPI set to. (using the switch, also located on the bottom of the mouse body). Personally, I liked the fact that during operation, all the lights on the mouse and the station are constantly on (some competing models, for example, only briefly signal a change in DPI), but you can, of course, influence the behavior of all the lights using the official free application, in which you can also select other DPI combinations than the preset ones (or save five profiles directly to the memory of the mouse itself).

A somewhat unexpected surprise for me was the mouse wheel, the mechanics of which looks much rougher than I’m used to with all the other mice that I’ve ever come across in my hands. Just so you understand – I don’t see this as a problem, quite the contrary: scrolling makes it more accurate and gives a more responsive touch response. When selecting items in the game menu, this seemed like a clear advantage, but I can imagine that trying to scroll through a long site as quickly as possible can be a little annoying for someone. The overall impression of the mouse is very good in any case – from the luxurious packaging, the elegant docking station, through the seemingly infinite endurance or smart RGB indicators, to the excellent accuracy and speed.

You can order the mouse directly from the manufacturer Razer, but it is also readily available in Czech stores.
