AbleGamers received a big award at the eSports Brasil Awards last Friday (16). Honorable Mention recognized the institution’s accomplishments in 2022, which ranged from delivering controls adapted for people with disabilities to unprecedented partnerships, participating in major festivals, and teaching the first classes of the Accessible Player Experience (APX) course.

In addition to the tribute, Premio eSports Brasil has partnered with AbleGamers to launch a new fundraising campaign in Cathars. The goal of the campaign is to raise funds to donate 12 more customized controls in 2023.

The highlights that led to AbleGamers being honored began in May when the institution formed the first APX group in Brazil. In total, the NGO trained 10 accessibility game developers. This training is a big difference for the Brazilian gaming market as there are currently just over 300 internationally recognized titles in the world.

In July, AbleGamers attended the BIG Festival along with publisher DX Gameworks. The two companies came together at a booth with accessibility never before seen at a video game fair. This allowed people with disabilities to play editions of DX Gameworks with adapted controls, audio gameplay description, and pound services provided by ICOM Libras.

Also at the BIG Festival, AbleGamers Brasil CEO Christian Bernauer took part in two panels. In the first, he shared the stage with Gilson Schwartz (Games for Change Latin America), Ricardo Chantilly (AfroGames) and Rodrigo Baggio (RECODE) to comment on the topic “High Impact Latin America: Games and Initiatives”. The second panel was dedicated to the topic “Accessibility in video games”. In it, Christian talked about the importance of developers dedicating themselves to serving people with disabilities, as well as talking about a course promoted by AbleGamers, Accessible Player Experiences.

The second half of 2022 also saw a complete overhaul of AbleGamers Customized Controller Donation Program to serve more people in Brazil and around the world. In the US, for example, this year an NGO has helped about 200 people with disabilities.

AbleGamers has partnered with Submarino to launch a Game for All campaign during the week of Gamer’s Day, August 28th. As part of this promotion, 10 videos were created to encourage discussion about game accessibility, allowing gamers with disabilities to experience the experience of playing with a professional player throughout the day. The campaign featured influencers such as CadeirantedoCS, Machadinho, Rafinha 1fps, Dizeritus, Nerdsurdo, Cadeirante FPS, TayHuhu, The Darkness, Voltan, Brabox and Oi Francine.

In September, AbleGamers Brasil held its sixth annual event that raised 27,000 BRL to promote accessibility in Brazil and provide adapted controls for gamers with disabilities. The action took place in a hybrid format and allowed more than 20 people with disabilities to meet both live and face-to-face, which is unprecedented in the world of games in Brazil. The event had controls adapted for testing, service in pounds, the presence of major influencers such as Lucky Salamander, Haru, Makson Lima, Queiroga and a live performance by the Nerdstones.

September also saw the launch of a donation campaign for AbleGamers Brasil through the Microsoft Rewards Program. However, players can now use their points to donate to NGOs through the program’s official app, Xbox, or website. Donations range from 1,000 (R$ 3) to 5,000 points (R$ 15) and can be repeated multiple times. The donations received under this program already exceed 2,000 reais.

In October, as part of an unprecedented Gotham Knights partnership, WB Games gifted AbleGamers an original artwork created by Ivan Reis, the comic book artist responsible for Batman, Superman, Green Lantern, Aquaman and other DC comic book heroes. This art will be auctioned off in 2023 and the money will be returned to the NGO.

Ending 2022 with a bang, AbleGamers Brasil has launched its official Instagram page, credited by @ablegamersbr. There, the NGO will publish the main news and the most important events of the coming months!

In 2023, AbleGamers Brasil plans to continue in this vein and launch a label for content creators who support an NGO in the first half. In addition, there are goals to provide more adapted controls, create additional APX classes, and partner with video game fairs and trade shows to make them more accessible to people with disabilities. The seventh annual event will still have a few news to be revealed soon!
