Blizzard announces that Overwatch 2 will see the return of the Overwatch World Championship in 2023. The main international competition in FPS games has been absent for the past three years, with the Overwatch League pros taking the stage card esports. As soccer fans around the world prepare for the FIFA World Cup Final between Argentina and France, Overwatch 2 prepares to bring together 36 national teams to compete for the trophy.
The Overwatch World Championship 2023 is scheduled to begin in June 2023, with Regional Qualifiers to determine the top 16 teams that will compete in the Group Stages and Finals in fall 2023. Blizzard says it will announce the participating countries and regions in January. At the same time, registration will also be opened for each competition committee, which will be in charge of the selection and selection of the teams.
While it may seem likely that these locations will be dominated by Overwatch League Pros and Overwatch Contenders, Blizzard will host an open tournament called World Cup Trials in February that will offer winning players a guaranteed trial spot for their team. Those who lose will be able to register from March. Blizzard says you should be at least a Diamond rank in competitive Overwatch 2 play, though we suspect successful entrants will be higher up the ladder. It’s always good to see the underdog story though!
In addition to seeing the world’s best Overwatch 2 players in action, fans will also receive a variety of Overwatch 2 in-game challenges and rewards to celebrate the tournament as it unfolds. Hopefully we get our hands on the team skins too!
It will be interesting to see which countries play a big part in the tournament – South Korea will likely be the favorite to hold the trophy for the first three years, but will have to beat the reigning Overwatch World Cup champions. United States, which beat South Korea in the 2019 semifinals before winning the trophy against China.
Since then, the Chinese Overwatch 2 scene has continued to flourish, so they should be considered serious contenders as well, though the recent expiration of Blizzard China’s deal with Netease has caused some upheaval in the scene. There is also likely to be some notable competition from France, Sweden, Canada and Denmark and of course the UK is likely to act hoping for a better result than their disappointing 2019 results.
