Anyone who has read a science fiction book or even seen a Terminator movie knows that technology will eventually kill us all. No matter how much control we think we have over our artificial machines, they always seem to regard humanity as useless and we are destroyed before you can even think of the word “heaven” or anything that might come after it. .
Such is the case with Synced, the next cooperative shooter from Level Infinite. Here you are part of a small underground resistance movement that was left on Earth after the apocalypse caused by the AI created by humanity itself. You and your teammates must destroy the AI-created nanites and ask Nerva to save humanity.
Like any good sci-fi setting, Synced has a lot of new terminology to absorb and a great backstory to dive into. To help you prepare for the open beta, we’ll cover some of the synced history, how to tell Nerva from Nano apart, and what it all means when you’re really in the thick of the action.
It’s the end outside
In the world of Synced, the Shinar Corporation has developed an AI known as MIMIR, which is, you guessed it, out of control. MIMIR decided to take control of the humans and corrupted them with a code that turned the atoms that make up their bodies into a mixture of graphite, carbon fiber, and nanotubes, which is why they are called nano. Pretty terrible stuff.

The worst of this apocalyptic event took place in the exclusion zone known as Meridian, and this is where you will compete to try and collect the precious Nerva, an energy resource that also acts as in-game currency. Are you helping prevent infections by killing them, but can you also gain nerf by doing so?
Your main base of operations will be Haven, a safe place near the Snake River Valley in Washington, where your operations will be concentrated. In Haven, you can arm yourself with new weapons and gear after your run, upgrade your gear with powerful mods, and go hiking with friends. You can even equip an extremely important part of the kit: your very own Nano.
Online
You see, Nanos in Synced is not only your biggest threat, but also an opportunity to become one of your best allies. Using Nano technology against them can give you a huge boost in combat ability and can be the difference between life and death in a particularly difficult situation.

However, you will not get Nano from the beginning of the quest. Although you can choose which of the four Nanos you want to take with you: the huge but agile Crusher, the long-range Suppressor, the defensive Sentinel, or the Sensory Seer, you won’t have access to any of them until ‘what you’ have defeated in battle in Meridian. Once out of action, you’ll sync up with the remains of their nanomachines to create your own Nano, granting you a variety of abilities.
The Guardian, for example, can set up a shield when deployed and can then attack. But when not deployed, you’ll gain an additional passive shield whenever you point your weapon down. Similarly, the Seer will show you where enemies are on your radar when they’re not deployed, but he can also dash out into the world to create a decoy and fire lasers at his targets.
If you’re lucky on your excursions, you’ll find a special chip that will allow you to take a second Nano with you, but it’s worth remembering that you can only use one at a time. Don’t expect your own nano army to run around, take out enemies while you sit back and relax.
fight for survival
Winning at Synced comes in many forms. Your first challenge will most likely be the PvE mode, where you and two other racers will enter one of five different sectors to complete objectives, collect loot, and defeat a huge boss. You can try to manage these sectors on your own, but you’ll almost certainly be destroyed in a matter of minutes, and you won’t be able to revive yourself if you’re killed.

Each sector is divided into three stages, and you won’t have much time to sit around looking for loot. You will find an increasing difficulty bar that fills up over time. As the name suggests, as the gauge fills up, the difficulty of the game increases – when it fills up, you start taking damage even if there are no enemies around. Clear the storm from which enemies emerge and you will slow down the progress of the gauge creating a safety bubble where the difficulty will remain the same. But you can’t stay there forever.
You’ll also be able to find Shards of Lore during a quest, though you won’t be able to decipher them until you return to Haven. Gather enough of them and you will find out for yourself what has happened to the world around you and what has been done to combat the rising tide of Nanos.

Or, if you prefer to fight other people, PvP is also available. Here, your goal will be to secure the roaming harvester drones that are sucking Nerva out of the ground. But in these large-scale battles, you will first have to stop the enemy units from reaching them. Don’t worry if you’re not equipped enough for them: while there are constant weapon mods and upgrades in PvE, in PvP everyone is on the same playing field, so it’s really a test of skill.
There’s a lot more to find in Synced, but for that you’ll need to dive in. The open beta will start shortly and offer access to everything the game has to offer, so now is a great time to try it out ahead of a full release next year.
