On December 9th, 10th and 11th, the Wally Salomão Cultural Center, home to the world’s first favela esports training center, will host the first AfroGames Favela Festival. Sponsored by the Secretariat for Integration of the Municipality of Rio de Janeiro, the Geek & Games Fair will bring culture and entertainment to the heart of Vigario Geral, a favela in Rio de Janeiro. The schedule is electrifying and includes: esports championships, game development Game Jam, cosplay competition, lectures and master classes with big names on stage. The highlight of the program will be the graduation of more than 150 students, which will take place on Saturday at 10:00. At the event every day there is a drawing of gifts, admission is free.

AfroGames Favela Festival

Ricardo Chantilly, chief executive of AfroGames, notes that the project was created with the goal of democratizing access to technology: “We are very excited about the opportunity to bring the world of billionaire games to the favela in Rio de Janeiro. The event will last three days, which will certainly help fight digital malnutrition by providing young people from the favelas with the tools to feel part of this megauniverse. On Friday the 9th, the event starts at 3:00 pm, and highlights include a concert by AfroReggae, a workshop with streamer Diane “Medusa” with valuable tips on using social networks, and lectures by Luis. Queiroga and Eduardo Dutra, representatives of FÚRIA, have chosen the best esports organization in Brazil.

On Saturday the 10th, in addition to the graduation, Enel Brasil will present additional information about the third season of PlayEnergy, the company’s global initiative that is challenging climate issues and electrification this year. The Champions of the Future game, developed in collaboration with Campus Party, is aimed at young people aged 14 to 20 and brings prizes up to 1,500 euros to students and teachers. At 10:00 on the main stage, Fernando Rodriguez from Enel will talk more about the game. The place for registration will be open in the afternoon, and at 16:00, a notebook will be drawn among those who register during the event. Also on Saturday, Wilson Melo will give a lecture on “Can You Make Money Making Games?”, while streamer and creator Guilherme “Dz7” Borges will give tips on how to become a streamer.

Sunday the 11th will be full of emotions. Meet the winner of the AfroGames Jam festival – Favela. As part of the game development marathon, the winning team will receive 3,000 reais. Also worth mentioning is a cosplay contest that will give out prizes for the best costumes and a lecture on “How to Become an Announcer” led by narrators Flavius ​​”Akakarota” and Will “Blackville.

AfroGames was established in 2019 with the aim of educating and retraining young favela residents to work in the e-sports market.
