Debuted in the original Modern Warfare (2019), this next-generation engine delivers the most advanced Call of Duty ever. Inspired by this cohesive development mechanism, development teams set about tackling these new challenges. Gameplay and water physics
The first thing players notice—and react to—when they enter a new battlefield in Modern Warfare® II is that water isn’t just a decoration or other barrier. Players can (literally) dive, move around, and use the water as a tactical advantage. And for it to work, it had to be as real as possible.
“We spend a lot of time working with designers, trying to find ways to make water believable and realistic in terms of perception,” says Michal Drobot, director of studio and technology at Infinity Ward in Poland. “Our goal is to effectively simulate CGI in movies: you know CGI is good when it’s really not.”

Water isn’t just a background aesthetic in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II. In fact, it’s such an integral part of the environment that the development team has noticed that it inspires and influences new gameplay, even in beta. This new system is so reliable that it can even reveal tactical game information. “In a team game, you can really tell that the enemy team went through the flooded tunnels because they are dripping,” says Drobot.
To do this, Drobot and his team implemented a sophisticated new system that allows all objects in the game to be soaked with varying effects on appearance and performance, and eventually dried depending on the type of material.

Despite the extra processing power available for the latest PCs and consoles, development teams approach the latest hardware with the following mindset: “If we have the opportunity to use something shiny and quirky that doesn’t improve the gaming experience, we try to avoid it.” First of all, it’s the gameplay. So next-gen consoles for us, first and foremost, means better visibility, better clarity for gamers, better latency, and better performance.”

“In addition to the obvious benefits of next generation consoles, such as higher resolutions and smoother streaming, they also provide visual clarity and performance,” says Drobot. “Call of Duty’s hallmark performance is 60fps – the new consoles can deliver a solid 120Hz. In fact, this is very important for a more competitive gameplay. Even regular gamers will have no trouble telling the difference between the two modes – at 120Hz the game is definitely much smoother.”
Beauty is in the details, and in this case, the studio was keen to ensure that no detail was too small or overlooked. “We worked hard to optimize the game to run at 120Hz with more clarity and resolution, and then we asked ourselves: what is missing? If there is any extra power we can use, let’s use it to further improve the visuals.
Therefore, we added better shadows and textures. In principle, everything that we could improve in terms of quality, we have done. And there are several features exclusive to next generation consoles. Perhaps most notable is the water rendering mentioned above.”
Improved player and target recognition

In intense multiplayer games like Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II, developers had to solve a long-standing problem related to character contrast and visibility. Basically, it’s about the risk of characters blending into their environment, especially at a distance. “What if you have a dark corner of your map and someone with dark operator skin is hiding there?” Drobot asked his team. “Or what do you do if you’re in a dark room looking at bright conditions and you have someone with very bright skin?”
Infinity Ward has developed a system that visually tracks players and their surroundings to automatically correct contrast. “We use processing similar to what real human perception does,” explains Drobot.
He adds: “In our game, we know where all the players are, but we don’t always know what they actually look like to you as a player. So we look at the image, the lighting conditions, the character’s skin type, or how the character actually looks, and try to make sure they contrast dynamically depending on the situation.”
VRS (Variable Rate Shading)
The big question that the team faced, shared by Drobot, was: “How do you make the game visually stunning and at the same time, like a shooter that is more about the player’s skills and not something that interferes with your gameplay? ”
“In fact, we have several systems in place to ensure that the players, whether your enemies or friends, are more visible to you,” he comments. “We have a very specialized rendering type that only uses what we call variable speed shading, where you can change the screen resolution very precisely. We can say, “Oh, the middle of the screen will be higher resolution than the sides.” Or maybe there is a point of interest on the screen that should have a higher resolution.”
“Obviously, player characters need to be at the highest resolution possible,” Drobot emphasizes. “So it doesn’t matter if you play in HD, Ultra-HD or 4k, we will still add more resolution to a certain part of the screen so that the enemy and the environment look more vivid to you.”

Paying attention to many details, Infinity Ward and the developers of Modern Warfare II still managed to focus on the big picture: to keep players interested. Every update and technical improvement has been made with the utmost care to provide the best possible gaming experience, regardless of platform. At the end of the day, in the heat of battle, it’s all about gameplay, whether you’re a hardcore gamer or new to the franchise.
