Dusk developer David Szymanski has unveiled his latest project, a Gremlins-inspired one-day retro FPS game called Chop Goblins, in which you travel through time following the eponymous antagonists and are billed as “killer and heartbreaking.” “. Inspired by classic first-person shooters like Doom, Quake, Half-Life, and Daikatana, Chop Goblins features several unique weapons to wield in a variety of locations around the world. Coming to Steam in early January 2023 to ring in the New Year in style.
“You thought it would be fun to go to the nearest museum and rummage through the artifacts stored there,” says the description of the game’s intro, trapped in a dusty chest in the basement. Now they are on the loose and once again wreaking havoc on the world. Determined to make up for your mistake, you embark on a space-time quest to track down and arrest the biggest troublemakers in a short shooter that Szymanski says is unique.
He describes the game as a “microshooter”: “a first-person shooter designed to be played in a single session without sacrificing depth, variety, or creativity in gameplay and level design.” However, if you want to spend more time with Chop Goblins, fear not: despite the estimated 30-minute completion time, Szymanski promises leaderboards, achievements, and secrets that will keep you coming back for hours on end. Plus, his short runtime can make him the perfect lunch break when you just want to kick back and blow up some bad guys.
Chop Goblins features five levels set in different time periods: modern times, 19th-century Transylvania, ancient Greece, and “the not-too-distant future.” You’ll also get five unique weapons to experiment with, and given Twilight’s lineage, we can’t wait to try them out for ourselves. They range from the Antique Flintlock pistol to the Mk.II “Vlad” Impaler automatic stake pistol.
Chop Goblins launches on Steam on January 2, 2023.
