While the best Skyrim mods can add everything from new nature-related spells and magic sets to the ability to skate Lydia in Bethesda’s biggest Elder Scrolls game, sometimes it’s the more subtle mods that can make the most dramatic contributions. In fact, subtle sounds are the talk of the day, as this update to the fantasy game reworks all of the ambient sounds you’ll hear on your journey through Skyrim.

The Regional Sounds Expansion mod for The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim from creator DylanJamesWasTaken is a massive overhaul of the sounds of towns, dungeons, and open spaces in an open world game. It’s based on an older mod called Audio Overhaul for Skyrim, but removes the atmospheric parts and uses them extensively to help really sell Skyrim’s real-world fantasy.

Personally, I have always valued the experience of being in the world of Skyrim. The missions are decent, the combat is passable, and the roleplaying systems offer enough depth to keep you coming back; but the true magic of Skyrim is how it all fits together in a world that feels alive and inspires you to explore every nook and cranny. As such, it’s hard to overstate what good surround sound design can bring when it comes to bringing that experience to life.

The Regional Sounds expansion introduces “subtle and unobtrusive” sounds that offer something “significantly more vibrant and varied than what’s available in the base game.” Hike through the Whiterun tundra and you’ll hear the breeze blowing through the grassy fields as insects buzz and roam the desert. Climb the Reach and you will find strong winds, the cries of eagles echoing through the mountains and rocks falling from the cliffs. Stroll through the mudflats of Hjaalmarch and be sucked into the eerily dead atmosphere, filled with the croaking of the local amphibian population.

On the other hand, head to the nearest town or city and you’ll hear how the mod is a mix of a custom kick and the game’s original sound portfolio rebalanced to replicate the hustle and bustle of Skyrim’s various settlements. . You’ll hear residents going about their business, yelling in the distance and more to mimic driving in heavier traffic without feeling forced or unrealistic. Additionally, a local ambience has been added to built areas where appropriate, such as the whistling of the wind in the rocky valleys of Markarth.

If that all sounds like it and you’re ready to really feel it, you can check out the Skyrim Regional Sounds expansion mod over on Nexus Mods.

Those of you looking to further enhance your Skyrim experience may want to check out the Skyrim Northern Roads mod, which rebuilds many of the game’s streets and byways. The mods have also introduced a new Daedric DLC for Skyrim in the Shivering Isles. Meanwhile, the former Skyrim developer has unveiled its new horror hunting sim, The Axis Unseen, which promises a world five times the size of Skyrim. We’ve also got more of the best PC RPGs to explore if you’re looking for something completely different.
