The Oculus Quest 2 is one of the easiest VR headsets to use, as Meta’s offline approach to Quest headsets makes setup relatively easy; you don’t need a PC or external sensors. Charge your headset, turn it on, follow the instructions, and you’re good to go.
That doesn’t mean you can’t play Steam games on the Oculus Quest 2. Thanks to the Oculus Air Link, which is also compatible with the original Quest and Meta Quest Pro, you can play some of the best VR games available today. Quest, like Half-Life Alyx or Star Wars: Squadrons.
However, the strength of Quest 2 lies in its simplicity. Requiring no additional devices, it is often considered the best VR headset by many VR users, with over 10 million units sold. So if you’re looking to get into Beat Saber for the first time, here’s our Quest 2 setup guide.
1. Download the Meta Quest app.
We recommend downloading the free Meta Quest app first, available for Android and iOS. If you’re new to Oculus, create a Meta account or use your Facebook profile to sign in. While a Facebook account was mandatory for all Quest 2 users, in late 2022 Meta reduced this requirement to an option.
While you can use the app to connect the Quest 2 to your TV, it’s also a handy companion that lets you browse the Meta Store without having to put on your headphones. We recommend that you activate Bluetooth on your smartphone at this stage so that you can connect your devices with less difficulty while wearing a virtual reality headset.
2. Take your Oculus Quest 2 out of the box.
Take the Quest 2 headset and touch controllers out of the box. Charge the earphones with the USB Type-C cable (included) on the left side of the earphones; there is a small port just below the head strap. After connecting to a power source, wait for the charging indicator to change from orange to green.
Each controller requires one AA battery. Slide off the battery cover that is on the opposite side of the touch controller grip button and snap it back into place when you are done. Put on the headphones, fully tighten the headband, and then grab the controllers. For safety reasons, we recommend that you put your hands through the wristbands so they don’t fly across the room in the middle of the game.
3. Turn on your Oculus Quest 2.
If this is your first time activating Quest 2, follow the on-screen instructions and activate it inside. Using the VR headset outdoors may cause damage from sunlight. Unfortunately, we are unable to provide direct screenshots of this step as it is prohibited by Meta for security reasons. Choose language settings, link your account, connect to Wi-Fi, and more.
This is where you’ll also set Guardian Quest 2’s boundary, which defines your virtual play space and keeps it in place. Upon approaching, a blue barrier appears, which turns red if you have almost exceeded these limits. It is not necessary to configure the Guardian each time, although it can be manually reset through “Settings”. Once the Guardian is ordered, your Quest 2 is ready to use.
