Modern Warfare 2 weapon attachments confuse players of the latest Call of Duty FPS game with their vague descriptions and overabundance of poorly explained terminology. While Infinity Ward’s multiplayer is already hugely popular on Steam, Battlenet, and consoles, players are finding building the best Modern Warfare 2 weapons a tedious task as they struggle to figure out what the attached pieces actually do.
While previous games Call of Duty Vanguard and Call of Duty Cold War offered a full stat breakdown of your weapons, MW2 forgoes that system and simply offers a positive or negative wave for each stat by looking at the attached effects. You can get a bit more of an idea of how each one is different by looking at the changes in your columns, but the overly complex terminology makes even that difficult to parse.
“Why is there now recoil control, recoil smoothness, recoil stabilization, recoil stability, vertical recoil control and horizontal recoil control,” asks a user on Reddit MW2, “Can we mount something else? It’s completely unnecessary and I’m just trying to give the illusion of complexity so they can add more attachments”. Others responded by pointing out that some terms are actually synonyms. It would seem that they all fall under the general band of “recoil control” but that just confuses still plus the numbers.
Another player humorously notes that the Cronen Zero-P Optic scope, described as “Advanced 4x Optics”, curiously offers players “5.0x magnification” among its benefits. They simply ask, “So what is it?”
One reviewer points out that in 2019’s Call of Duty Modern Warfare, “recoil control” applies to vertical recoil, while “stabilization” refers to horizontal recoil. They say, “I guess it’s the same now, but then why is vertical and horizontal management also mentioned? What gives durability? Visual hindsight, if I had to guess, or maybe wobble during the shot? Undoubtedly, there is much to try to find out.
Personally, I’ve really enjoyed Modern Warfare 2’s multiplayer so far, but I’m least impressed by its weapon system. There are so many attachments out there now, and with such a vague and confusing mix of pros and cons for each, that trying to figure out which one is the “best” one to use seems impossible to me.
