Moonbreaker Digital Board Game Stops Monetization in First Update

The digital miniature board game Moonbreaker just got its first content update, and with it, Moonbreaker left all of its in-game monetization behind. Developer Unknown Worlds Entertainment, the studio behind Subnautica, said the in-game store and monetization model were detracting from their goal of “making Moonbreaker as fun as possible”.

In practice, this means that the in-game store is now disabled and Moonbreaker’s premium currency, Pulsars, is no longer available. All units are automatically unlocked and Unknown Worlds says that units added in future seasons will also be automatically unlocked. This of course means that the boosters are no longer needed and thus have been removed as well.

Unknown Worlds is also refunding all Pulsar purchases made since the start of Moonbreaker’s early access period: the studio says these funds were transferred directly to players’ Steam wallets within hours of the latest patch.

Moonbreaker Founder’s Packs will remain in players’ inventory on Steam, and the Pulsars included in the pack will be replaced with exclusive skins for Zax and Slopper. However, Unknown Worlds says that it will return these packs if players aren’t happy with the change. These players have until December 6, 2022 to return the packs.

Previously, Unknown Worlds ditched its Pulsars cargo system to play Moonbreaker’s boss escape mode, Cargo Run.

In patch 1.1, “merit” and “virgin” coins were replaced with sparks and can be used to purchase unit rarity upgrades, which Unknown Worlds says is only a cosmetic upgrade.

You should also see faster progression throughout the season and new rewards added to the season.

The patch also introduces major changes to the rules of the game: there are no longer any boosts or “paint” mechanics in each match. Squad rosters have been reduced from 10 to eight, and you’ll start each match with your entire squad.

These are pretty fundamental changes to the Moonbreaker game, so be sure to read the full patch notes on the official site. The update also includes a new game map, Cholek, and the studio has released the second episode of its storied podcast, Moonbreaker: Tales from the Reaches. It’s fun to listen to while using the miniature painting kit in the game.
