From corn salesman to two-time Brazilian Free Fire Champion; Discover modesty by Vivo Keyd

The rise of Free Fire in Brazil has played a key role in democratizing access to gaming in the country’s fringes. The stories of Free Fire players whose lives have been changed by the opportunities the game has given them have overwhelmed them and reached the competitive stage. In Vivo Keyd, the first two-time LBFF champion team, 21-year-old Modestia is one of the few who has been able to fulfill the family’s dreams by starting to play. He worked with his stepfather as a corn salesman at a lowland football field, but after gaining a place in a competitive scenario, he repaid the family’s support by giving his mother a home.

At the time he found out about Free Fire, Matheus Enrique even preferred to play on a computer, but the easy access that a cell phone provided made it difficult to decide to continue playing through a device, even if not the most modern one: “What? made me play Free Fire itself was a matter of ease. Easy access to the game, because it requires not so much, not such a strong mobile phone and not so many peripherals, so anyone can play well,” he said.

And the persistence and desire to get something out of Free Fire soon paid off: Modesti entered the professional scene, going through teams like SKS, B4 and Flamengo, until he landed on Vivo Keyd, where he won two championships and two medals, in addition to two classifications for the Free Fire World Series (FFWS): “I had a dream and a big desire, and it worked.”

Full interview with the player

You joined Vivo Keyd in LBFF 4 and since LBFF 5 have achieved very good results in championships (champion, runner-up, runner-up and two-time champion). To what do you attribute the good performance of Vivo Keyd in the championships?

This was the team that was put together to win the title. In LBFF 4 we had much lower performance, but in LBFF 5 this command was collected. So from the moment this team was put together, Modesty, Deadgod, Nando and General, we had very good performances. Already have 4 LBFFs, two titles and two vices. And two participation in the worlds now. So the most important thing in this team is always the will to win. Determination and the will to win, this is not a team that wins and then stops. We want to win everything, leave a legacy and history.

And I think we are already doing it. There are many people who have recognized our work and know that we are a very strong team, that we are a team that fights in every final. So I think that more dedication and the will to win gives the team more, as well as the fact that there are a lot of high quality players in the team. There are four players who can make a difference at any time.

We know that before you started playing Free Fire, you were more into PC than mobile. What about the game made you want to switch to mobile devices so badly?

At the beginning of the game, I really wanted to play Free Fire on the computer, but it was much lower, so I had a mobile phone that, unlike the PC, ran the game. I played with some of my friends so it was more “for fun” to have fun because they were the people I liked at my school. And I enjoyed the game, I had fun playing with the boys. I also developed by playing daily.

Until the moment I thought, “Ah, I think I can do something in this game here.” And that’s when I started to really dedicate myself to the game. I also spent a lot of time watching the lives of players who were already pros, so I had a lot of things to do in the game. And what made me play Free Fire the most was the ease. Easy access to the game because it doesn’t require as much, not so powerful mobile phone or peripherals, so anyone who enters can play well.

What was it like to combine work with Free Fire at a time when I was not yet a professional?

At that time it was very difficult. I liked to play a lot, but I didn’t have as much time as I used to, you know? I worked, arrived, took a shower and played a little. I used to play 1 hour 30 minutes a day, I played some amateur championships when I got home and I even managed to take it easy, but there were days when I was very tired and ended up sleeping without even playing.

It’s good that there were a lot of people who trusted me, so I never got to the point of getting discouraged and saying, “Ah, I’m never going to play again.” What little I played was okay, so I was able to juggle both things very well. It wasn’t that long, but it was quiet. The real problem was that I didn’t have much time, but I still managed to play in some amateur championships.

What do you think was your biggest accomplishment in your years of playing Free Fire?

The biggest achievement in the game was in LBFF 5 when we became champions for the first time. It was hard to get into but it was a sense of accomplishment because I’ve been in the competitive scene for a while and still haven’t won a single collective title. I have already conquered something individual, but not collective, and this is the most important thing.

And I think that was the most important achievement, because when you win the first time, it’s different from the second. I think it’s more of a sense of accomplishment. You feel like you’ve managed to fulfill a dream with all your work attached to it.

Outside of the game, my biggest achievement was the house I gave my mother because of Free Fire. I have been in competition for a long time, three years, and all this time I thought about it and finally I was able to do it. These two things are very important to me.

Have you always wanted to give your mom a house, even before Free Fire?

Yes, this has always been a dream for me, even before I joined Free Fire. We’ve been filming for a long time, so it was quite difficult, you know? I always had this in mind, but I didn’t know how it would happen. I had only a dream and a great desire, and it worked.

And what achievements are missing to cross off the list?

I think the biggest dream at the moment, both mine and the whole team, is to win the World Championship. In the last we were in fourth place. We were left a little bitter with the result. No matter how bad the result was, we came to win, and not just to participate. And I think that this time we have everything to win, because our team took a little bit from how other teams played after the last World Cup.

So, we already have more experience, more knowledge about how things are with time zones, etc. So all the experience was very important for us, in addition to what we learned from our mistake. And in terms of strategy, we intend to make a game similar to ours on LBFF.

Apart from the name, of course, what do you expect from Thailand?

Look, we don’t have much to know yet, because we’re still having a meeting to sort out all the details of the trip, where we’re staying and all that. But I think I have more expectations from the food because there were a lot of things I didn’t like at the last World Cup in Singapore. So I always have butterflies in my stomach about this.

In addition to career achievements, Free Fire also gave you the opportunity to meet some idols such as Neymar. Who else would you like to meet?

I don’t think there is anyone who seems as distant to me as Neymar. I’m also a big fan of other players, even basketball players, but he was very far from my reality, so it was a really cool moment to meet him.

If you had one piece of advice for past modesty, what would it be?

Who does not risk will not win. So always work hard and stand firmly on your feet to make things work out.
