EA has issued an apology to The Sims community after admitting that the recent Behind The Sims Summit did not have enough representation of black creators in Life during the creator segments. The event, held on October 18, revealed The Sims 5 as Project Rene and detailed some of the upcoming additions to The Sims 4 that players can look forward to.

The creator of The Sims, Ebonix, who is also a co-founder of Black Twitch UK, i went to twitter to express his disappointment that only one black creator, Steven “SpringSims” Works, appears in the creator video that showcases some of the top members of The Sims creative community. His disappointment was echoed by many other creators, prompting a response from EA on The Sims official Twitter account.

By contacting Ebonix directly, the account cheep, “You are right in your disappointment and we let you down. We owe it to you and every one of our Black creators and players to make sure you are seen and celebrated for all you bring to The Sims.” The account also posted a statement in the form of a public quote from the original Ebonix thread. based on this “Our creator segments at Behind The Sims Summit did not adequately represent our large community of gamers.”

EA goes on to say that “simmer blacks deserve to be seen in everything we do in The Sims, so we take responsibility for that mistake and will do better in the future.” Ebonix responds to the answer, say it “Accountability is the first step, but we know that accountability without action is just dreams sold. The voices I have heard from the community are very clear. There must be significant real action. Not caused by these circumstances. We’ll see!”

Other creators echo the need to take more action. Hannah ‘lomadia’ Rutherford, Twitch Ambassador add“I see black creators constantly kicking their asses for your game, and it’s been that way for years. This is basically how I follow The Sims news. The fact that you missed this in 2022 and Black History Month in the UK is mind blowing. other fans ask ea hire more Black creators and marketers to join your team, and consider the introduction of more cultural elements in The Sims that represent areas such as African culture.

During our interview with The Sims: Project Rene, executive producer Phil Ring said the team was always asking, “How can we make players feel more connected to the Sims they create?” He underscores his excitement by saying that “players are so excited that they can create themselves, they can create their friends, they can create the world around them.” The community seems more determined than ever to make sure EA lives up to that promise. Ebonix concluded by sharing a petition on Change.org asking EA to “improve black representation and acknowledge black culture in The Sims 4.”
