It appears that a potential Modern Warfare 2 Zombies-related data leak in the files of a new Call of Duty game has prompted its publisher, Activision, to take action. While it’s still very early days for an FPS game, Activision appears to have been involved in extracting this Modern Warfare 2 zombie information and removing it from the internet, which could lend legitimacy to the information.
We’ve reached out to Activision for comment on this story and will update you when we hear back. We should also note that we won’t be showing anything directly here.
The images shown in the selected modes for “Circle Zombies” and “Outbreak”, may appear to be maintenant after being violated by Activision, as the images disclosed by CODSpoitzImgz on Twitter indicate maintenant: “Cette image a été supprimée en réponse à un rapport du détenteur des Copyright”. [Activision]”.
This in no way confirms that Modern Warfare 2’s Zombies mode will appear in the next Call of Duty, but indicates that the data in the image is real. It’s tricky because there are no promises here, but it does make us wonder why Modern Warfare 2 had to have this in the code from the start.
Any further speculation about Modern Warfare 2’s Zombies mode is probably just going to lead to some disappointment, so it’s worth noting again that while what’s shown looks legit, it doesn’t mean we’ll actually get Modern Warfare. 2 zombies soon, or maybe never.
There’s another explanation for this Modern Warfare 2 Zombies reveal, given that it’s not nearly as exciting as the possibility of the mode appearing in the new Call of Duty to one degree or another. Since all Call of Duty games now use the same engine, this may have something to do with Treyarch’s next game in the series, as the code was simply left behind in Modern Warfare 2 by mistake.
Modern Warfare 2 Creative Director Patrick Kelly goes so far as to say that this shared engine means “each studio can directly contribute to each other’s work” and that the different development teams will always try to avoid each series being too similar.
