AMD RDNA 3 could significantly improve Radeon Ray Tracing performance

AMD’s upcoming RDNA 3 graphics cards will no doubt offer better performance than their current-gen Radeon counterparts, but Team Red hasn’t said anything about what improvements we can expect. With the 7000-series GPUs just a few weeks away, credible rumors about the performance of these processors are starting to surface, and they certainly look promising.

Compared to the best graphics card in the current Radeon stack, AMD RDNA 3 GPUs deliver more than twice the ray tracing performance of their predecessors. This is according to a reliable material source. graymon55which also indicates that the new architecture should increase the frame rate by “2x” with standard rasterization.

It is unclear whether these claims apply to the AMD Radeon 6950 XT or 6900 XT, but there is still a lot of room for improvement. Perhaps more important is how this promising RDNA 3 flagship stacks up with Nvidia’s RTX 4000 series.

As we pointed out in our Nvidia GeForce RTX 4090 review, it would take something special to combat the “absurd frame rates” made possible by the top-tier Lovelace card. AMD FSR 2.0 helped level the playing field with Nvidia DLSS, but Team Green’s frame generation feature might be too hard to beat.

AMD’s RDNA 3 launch could see two Radeon GPUs go up against the RTX 4000, so we could be in something of a battle royale, especially with Nvidia’s RTX 4080 debuting in November. However, if you need a graphics card for your PC right now, the AMD Radeon RX 6900 XT is the cheapest GPU we’ve ever had and can be had for as low as $700.
