Steam Deck mod adds a nifty external fan to Valve’s laptop

Band steam bridge Enthusiasts came up with an external fan for Valve’s gaming laptop to improve airflow and cooling. Dubbed Project CoolDeck, the unusual contraption is supposed to draw heat from the guts of the laptop, though some are skeptical of its usefulness.

Designed by Nupp_Engineers, steam bridge The mod effectively attaches a small fan to the back of Valve’s portable power station. One of the posted photos shows drilled air holes located behind the heatsink, with the fan on top and powered by a USB-C adapter.

In response to the airflow issues, Nupp_Engineers, a three-person team from Estonia, say a thermal camera was used to check for dangers of overheating. The fan is also small enough not to interfere with the best Steam Deck docking options, and can even be light enough not to add to the overall weight of the machine.

There are no details that accurately describe the work done on the CoolDeck project. From the images alone, though, it’s pretty clear how the Steam Deck has been altered. Nupp_Engineers also said that there will be more information in a future article, so it should shed some light on the situation.

Some of you may be wondering if an additional fan attached to the back of the deck is really useful. Well that’s what some in the comments have been asking. There are those who claim that Steam Deck shouldn’t overheat at all when used correctly, which means CoolDeck is overkill. However, the project demonstrates that there are great ways to externally cool a Valve handheld, even if the benefits aren’t that obvious.
