At the end of last year we finally got confirmation that Ubisoft was preparing a remake of Splinter Cell. While little is known about the direction this new take on Sam Fisher’s stealth games will take, the director recently announced that he will be leaving Ubisoft and embarking on a “new adventure.”
According to his LinkedIn profile, the Splinter Cell remake was directed by David Grivel between last November and now. Grivel is also known as a game designer for Crysis 2 before joining Ubisoft in 2011 to work on games like Ghost Recon Future Soldier, Splinter Cell: Blacklist, Assassin’s Creed Unity, and Far Cry 6.
“After more than 11 years at Ubisoft, it’s time to embark on a new adventure,” Grivel said in a LinkedIn post. “11 years is a long time and it is almost impossible to summarize it in an article, but I must say that I am lucky. I have been fortunate to work with so many wonderful people over the years. I made so many friends.” (rated by GameRant).
Grievel also adds that people should “stay tuned” for his “next adventure,” which will likely be revealed soon. It is not yet known who will replace Grivel.
A new version of Splinter Cell was announced late last year, with Ubisoft saying it would rebuild the game “from scratch using [the] Snowdrop Engine, which powers Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora and the studio’s upcoming Star Wars game.
Recent job postings at Ubisoft also indicate what we can expect from the new version of Splinter Cell. “Using the first Splinter Cell game as a base, we are rewriting and updating the story for a modern audience. We want to keep the spirit and themes of the original game while exploring our characters and world to make them more authentic and believable.”
While development is currently underway at Ubisoft Toronto, nothing has been officially revealed about the game, but we wrote earlier this year that the new version of Splinter Cell needed some stealth.
